Rattle/buzz near intake, valve cover

Short of the story : Car boosts fine, no misfires, the engine itself sounds fine, just this rattle/whine is overlying. The sound appears to be coming from the back of the intake by the throttle body area or under that. Sounds like something is loose. The intake is vibrating quite a bit and the valve cover is vibrating too on the intake side, and the exhaust side has very little vibrating. My best opinion is a broken lash adjuster. I took the valve cover off, springs look fine from what I could tell. Here is the video.

Any chance this is my turbo bearings? The sound over top of my turbo area does sound a bit off, but this sound is definitely coming from other side of valve cover.

hi buddy .

this might sounds silly,

but get your self a peice of hose / fuel pipe with around 10mm internal bore about 2to3foot long .

place one end on your ear and very carfully with the engine running move the other end of the hose around till you find the noise but dont let it touch .

the hose acts like a stethoscope and will make what ever is at the other end louder and easier to find :O)

usualy works well :O)

Thanks for your suggestion I will try it.
I have a new symptom now, car will stall when being driven now. Almost no way this can be lash adjusters. A local mechanic says surely the engine is bad, cannot tell me what is wrong. I want to rebuild but cannot locate the problem. Seems everyone I have look at it says not sure.

you want to take it to a tried and tested evo specialist to locate and fix the prob or you will end up trying a few diff garages still not knowing whats wrong and doing it yourself anyway because you have spent out a small fortune locating the prob, it wont hurt uprating the lashes and its an easy job to do, will take about hour to hour n half n there is a good vid on youtube showing how to remove em with a flat blade screwdriver, works a treat

This is actually the problem I am having. I cannot find any mechanics that works on MMC motors enough to tell me. MMC Japan wants more than 500USD just to look at it.

MAJOR UPDATE: Dipstick today pulled up horribly grey oil, only the kind caused by metal shavings. Drained some of the oil from pan, fully grey and full of shavings. Dropped the pan to find a metal bracket that holds the thrust bearing/sleeve rod.

Surely, this is the problem, but is this what caused the noise? Is this crank walk? Commonly, when a 4g63 gets this, how bad is it to repair the internals? I have a lot of mechanic know how and really want to do this project of getting into bottom block but does the cost of rebuilding more than a new engine, considering damage is minimal. Also, turbine was filled with glue like oil. However, no play.

Any advice on this crankwalk issue is appreciated.

Will update when I have a look inside, the motor is almost out just resting on a few mounts to drop it tomorrow morning.
