I'm looking at buying an Evo 8 FQ300. I have seen one I like but the heater matrix has gone, the previous owner has bypassed the matrix so runs fine but has no hot air into cabin. Is this one I should avoid? I know it is a big job to fix but what causes the matrix to fail? What else should I look out for in one of these?

If it runs fine with it bypassed and doesnt overheat or pressurise it 'should' be fine. Does the advert tell you that is been bypassed or have you been to see it?

Take it out for a long drive. Make sure it doesnt overheat or pressurise....feel the water pipes make sure there not solid. Check the ayc lights on the dash, it should have one light on (tarmac/gravel/snow) if it has three on the pump could be fucked. Listen out for any whines or rattles from the transmission....do a couple of full lock circles on a car park listen for clunking....besides all that do your regular checks oil water an all that and do a propper hpi check
