Newman 272 cams

Has anyone tryed the Newman 272 cams in an evo 8 ?

Was thinking about getting a set of these but cant find any reviews or logs for them

wouldnt you need some springs and retainers too, being in the 272 category

No mate 272 you can still use standard springs and retainers but personally on high revving engines i would use uprated bee hive springs or double valve springs and titanium retainers.

I had to use springs and retainers on my kelfords 272 which were a good cam

the kelfords are very good but do require the spring and retainers cause the have a large lift.
if you want better mid range and low end torque you could look at the kelford 264/270 setup which is what i'm running

would recommend something thats proven ie kelfords, Jun and piper but would stay away from BC's as these never seem to make the figures you would expect

And do you have info on valve float problem when uprated springs and retainers are not fitted?

Kelfords are a 1 off as they have a different profile and lift than any other cam. They are a great cam but real expensive compared to the others. HKS is over rated and your paying for the name. I have never had any problems using standard valves with 272 cams but i tend to use the E9 springs and retainers as they are a lot stronger. If you change the valves to ferrea, bc etc you will have to change the retainers or the collets do not secure them. Thats what i have found in the past.

Was looking at changing the vale springs and retainers, any recommendations?

I was not planning removing the head so was going down the line of pressurizing the cylinder and using a tool to do them in place, any recommendations on reasonably priced valve spring tools to do the job?

eBay bought the tool for 60 ish and works very well

If you change the valves are you porting and gas flowing the head? If you are not putting in any cams higher than 270/272 leave the valves standard but get your exhaust valve seats done for 3 angle seats making them the same as 1mm over sized exhaust valves. If you runing standard turbo 260 cams are fine but if you can get an E9 turbo i have a mate that does turbo refurbs and he can tweak the E9 Turbo and put in forged internals to give 480-500 BHP. You would need to change your pistons then. What are you looking to get from your evo? 400/400 or 450/400 is good at nominal costs.

Iv got a 10.5t hotside on its way to convert my standard turbo to e9 spec. and a stainless turbo elbow.

Id be happy if I could make near the 400 mark at the moment

Turbo is a start but its not all about how much bhp you get, torque is more important. I could give you my mates number who would tweak your turbo even more. If you want to have 400/400 or 450/400 you can get this from doing head work, porting, gas flowing, valves and cams but its pushing your bottom end to the limit being standard. BC springs and valves are ok i just dont like their cams as know a lot of guys that used them and they never do what the figures say. Did you know that piper will re-profile your standard cams to 264-268 profile cams for a nominal fee and also do the same with blanks you send them?
