New to the Evo scene...some guidance

Hi all,

I am Neil, based in Staffordshire, and totally new to the Evo scene. I have an extensive history in the Dub scene, but fancy a change....so the Evo it is

I have about £8k to spend and dont intend to track, but modify definately. Obviously i am looking for a solid base, but I have absolutely no idea of the different models, best ones, best spec/engine etc. This will be my weekend car.

Any advice, websites/article to read, things to look out for (apart from the normal FSH etc) that you can give would be greatly appreciated.

For 8k you should be able to get a nice 8gsr maybe even a fq if your lucky. Remain open minded to a lightly tuned evo as a lot of people insist on a completely standard one well that can only be done as long as there is standard ones about. If any work has been done to a car feel free to post details up here, receipts of work done would be good. Bare in mind that a gsr with stage 1-2 is nearly the same as the fq range. There is a post in here somewhere called model differences, have a peek through that as it explains all differences between all variants of evos.

Main thing is take your time and have fun with it

Just to give me a benchmark - how does this stand up to spec/age/cost etc:

Used MITSUBISHI LANCER EVOLUTION VII 2001 *Low Mileage* for sale - PistonHeads (Ref 1557414)

seems rather high for a 2001, but as I said, new to this world..... :meh:

Where did I say anything other...... There's a gsr and then the fq300 and upwards. And like said a stage 1 or 2 gsr will exceed 300 anyways so apart from the spoiler and long number plate not much else different, apart from exhaust which you would change too, and don't forget the fq-mr's which arnt just fq models with their piggy back ecus, more aggressive cams, higher pressure fuel pump ect

MR is different because of cams and turbo engine wise.
Piggyback ecu's are on the bigger FQ models

thats exactly my thought Rob - price seems high. I am also a bit bewildered with all the mods :cry:

Price isn't bad for all the info, mileage and mods. You can always knock the price down. It's been looked after having been seen by known evo specialists, for work done.
MR is a designation for a different model.
The one Mitsubishi should have made lol

PH add looks like a nice tidy import GSR with a few mods and mapped by a well known mapper.

To be fair, the 7 wsa a bit of a Marmite car. A bit heavier than the VI but did have some deisgns that make it easier/cheaper to mod. This one should be running 360 to 380bhp with those mods.

There is a known issue on th 7's and some early 8's where the rear wheel arches bubble from inside out. Needs to be caught early.

If I were spending my wedge I'd be looking for a standard 8 260 and get the upgrades done myself. Cheap starting point and you wont be inheriting someone elses choice on mods.

Where in Staffordshire are you based? I live in Stone myself, as far as I was aware I have the only evo in stone at the moment! Not that I know about them too much, new on the scene myself, this bunch are really helpful with the advice and whatnot should you ask any questions!

Cheers Jay, I am just north of Lichfield. Not seen many Evo's around this area at all. Need to see if there are any local meets so I can see a few cars and speak to the owners. What model do you have?

Yeah, my uncle used to have an r34 skyline, another rarely seen car in these parts!

Iv very recently bought an evo 8 FQ300, found a couple of issues with it, having a secondary vehicle inspection done next week though so I can iron out any issues that picks up.

With regard to local meets, I would also be interested in attending them, its worth looking around on this forum and the MLR as they also have meets not exactly sure when the next one is for us though!
