A bit more info.

Does it speed up with engine RPM.

Does it get any louder when reving.

when is it most noticeable.

Any difference when engine hot or cold.

When you say you replaced the tappets do you mean the lash adjusters? There known for making a ticking sound, does it sound like it's coming from under the rocker cover? You can buy bigger ones, standards ones have a 1mm hole you can get some with 3mm hole which allow more oil to flow

Get yourself a set of mechanics stethoscope and place it around the engine you'll be able to trace it better and will be more cost effective than just replacing stuff

there is a bracket at the back of the engine with a cylinder shape unit attached and it plugs into the loom
that unit can cause a ticking sound and it stopped when we removed the cable
what it's for I don't remember sorry but it's junked when rebuilds are done probably an environmentally friendly device

So if it's that it can just be unplugged or should it be replaced?
