Ok guys, been on the MOT training course and learnt a few new things;


Catalytic converter;

If you have an import vehicle that was built prior to March 2002 then the emissions test carried out should be a NON CAT test as no specific information can be obtained regarding its emission limits. This therefore means that technically you do not have to have a cat fitted as its tested as a non cat and cant be prooved to be standard equipment.

HID kits;

Vehicles fitted with standard HID headlamps are checked for self leveling, washers and beam pattern, however these items are only checked and must be working if fitted as standard. If an aftermarket HID kit is installed, then the only requirement is the beam pattern as the wash and self levelling is not standard equipment.

In regards to the beam pattern, it is perfectly acceptable for a flat beam with no kick up as long as its at the correct height. So as long as the kit you have fitted still is emitting a flat line then there should be no reason for rejection.

This is the current criteria and could change, if I find anything else that might be useful ill let you know

As for the no cat business is it deffo date manufactured and not registered? As I wonder when mine was actually made, registration was 2003 but mines number 65 so was prob made earlier

Is it an import? If its a UK car then it has to have one. It is deffinatly date manufactured though, he gave us an example of ford escorts being registered in 94 but having been built in 91 before the cat test and being stored because there were so many. Those escorts (whats left of them) still only need the non cat even though they were registered after the change over

Mine is 28 thought it still needed a cat on for the visual test? Know the mot test wasn't so strick with regulars to emissions, half the time they don't have evo's on the options list of vehicles.

I though that too and pulled him up on it, he just said if its an import it doesn't have to have one.

I asked this question also on my MOT course and was told that all vehicles 1st august 1992 on had to have a cat fitted as standard whether import or not and if one wasnt fitted as standard then proof by letter from manufacture was needed.

I think it might be down to how the manuals read but I have just downloaded a copy and it states to check for a cat if the vehicles qualifies for the test. I therefore believe that if your aware that the vehicle dosent require a cat test then you shouldn't be looking for one. But again, I guess thats down to the testers discretion

Imports from 1st aug 1992 to july 31st 1995, if they fail the first bet test and not listed as an EXACT model in the in service emissions book then its tested as non cat CO < 3.5% and HC < 1200ppm.
If its 1st august 1995 on and not listed as an EXACT model in the in service emissions book then its tested as cat test with default limits, CO < 0.3%, HC < 200PPM and LAMBDA 0.97 - 1.03. Idle 450 - 1500rpm and CO < 0.5%.

It's all a load of rubbish anyway cos i been led to believe its only at time of test so nothing stopping the owner removing his cat himself after the car has left premises and passed its mot
