after reading and watching vids on overrunning alternator pulleys on newer cars i thought i would see if i could retro fit one on my e4 ???
im not saying any one should do this, its just what i thought would be good to try :O)

now i dont know if there will be any great benefits to fitting this pulley apart from what the maker write and watching the youtube vids and it weighs twice as much as a standard pulley not ideal :O(
Benefits
• Allows the use of alternators with increased power output.
• Reduces the influence of the alternator mass on the belt drive.
• Decreases wear and tear on all belt drive components.
• Eliminates belt slip and therefore noise.
• Absorbs vibrations and fluctuations.
• Increases the life span of all accessory belt drive components.
but i like the idea and think it cant hurt to try , think they are standard on the evo x ..
the biggest problem i came across is the size of the standard pulley being around 70mm wide "65mm wide on the belt contact serface "as most other cars run a much smaller pulley ,
the pulley i chose is for a nissan navara
ina 535017710 . f552386.01
this is the right width and thread pitch " m17/1.5" but is a 7 rib pulley and not a 6 rib , meaning it sits out around 10mm more than the standard one
" not good as there isnt much room to play with between the alt and the body of the car ..
.
the alternator " alt " needs slight modding to make this pulley fit and the pulley needs slight modding to make it clear the body of the car but it can be done :O)
mods
alt
there is a small collar on the front of the alt that needs cutting off and fileing dead flat " and the hole left around the shaft needs opening out by 1mm " dremmle works well here "
pulley
in the small pic you will see a step in the top of the new pulley "higher than the bearing " this needs machineing flat level with the bearing " you may want to paint the machined surface before refitting
turn it over and the part that sits against the alt needs machineing by around .5mm to allow the grooves on the 2 pulleys to line up with each other when they are sat side by side , " very important " remember the new pulley is 1 groove taller .
thats it , fit the pulley making sure it spins freely and not snagging the front of the alt , refit the alt and belt and job done :O)
if more clearance is required im sure the alt mount could be filed to allow it to be moved away from the body of the car to make use of the 7th rib of the pulley giving factory clearance :O) have not found this to be a problem on my car . remember the standard pulley can always be refitted if required :O)
i also found 2 other pulleys that may have fitted , 6 rib and 70mm " audi a8 and vw transporter " but they had m16 threads so would prob require more work to the alt to make fit ???
cheers :O)
