massive rear diff leak (Evo 5 GSR)

Hi,
was at a trackday on Saturday. After a few laps I've got red flagged because of white smoke from the back of the car. So got towed back through the grass to the pits (ruining the slicks of course)
I've jacked the car up and there was oil all over the place in the whole rear diff area, but I couldn't locate where it came from. Car smoked because of burning oil on the exhaust. So I let the car cool down a bit, cleaned everything the best I could. Put it on stands and let the wheels turn in second gear. No more oil could be seen. Wen't for a small drive 1/2 mile and back on the jack, and then again, oil everywhere, seems to come from the top of the diff.

I'll normally get the car towed back home tomorrow, any hints, tips, checks I could do tolocate the leak or the problem. Should I directly take the diff off and check for cracks on the upper side?

Any tips are highly appreciated!

This is what happened to mine a couple of weeks ago and then it went bang. No obvious external signs of damage (other than oil everywhere). Internal damage was "extensive"

Iv just replaced my rear diff on my evo 8 over the week end after the front diff bearing went and I had a quick look over my old and new diff and on the top of the diffs are air releaf valves that stop pressure build up. Maybe take the diff off and check them ( takes around 2 hours to remover rear diff) hope u get it sorted mate
