The quality looks good to me Geof, but best way to compare them, is take the same photo with both cameras and compare them on the pc.
Got to remember the camera is a tool, so most of it is down to how you use it. The 450 can do a lot but you have to know how to use it. I had the 450 before, I've now got the 500D. If you do decide to get a DSLR, I can take you through the settings.

Canon are good mate, but to honest I think the Nikkon range is better than canon these days. Canon kit lens isn't up to much where the Nikon kit lens is very good and sharp.
I've got canon as all the stuff I have bought was canon, so need to sell the lot if I was to change make.
Best idea is to go into a local camera shop and try out different makes and see what you prefer.

Think they all are mate, same price range as Canon but your getting better quality images as the internal sensors are better and standard lenses seem to be sharper than canon. Unless you spend a lot of money on pro canon lenses.
The whole camera thing is a nightmare as so much to choose from, but seeing the images from DSLR cameras, the nikon one's are producing better images.
At the end of the day though any DSLR is very good, it just depends what you want to spend and how you use it.
