:(Hi Guys,

As explained in a post a long time ago.... I seem to be having this problem again....

When cold the engine revs perfectly no issues, when hot it seems to idle up and down and sometimes sounds like it "misses"...

I have had the car put into 4 different garages and they are all saying that there is nothing wrong with the car!!!! I dont think this is right!! They say that as it has "altered cams" this can cause this???:wtf:

A friend has suggested a few possible causes.....

The Idle control Valve - Where is this and how could i check it??
Core Pack - Anyway i can check??
Spark Plugs - Anyway i can check??

Without replacing each of the above, is there any true diagnosis which could actually tell me what is going wrong??!!!.. This is really getting me down and is holding me up as i have other mods i want to be getting on with...

If anyone can help in anyway i would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks
Steve

Have you taken it to an Evo specialist ?

And yea cams can cause this cos my old 7 did it and now my tommi does although not as bad cos ant managed to smooth most of it out when mapping :)

Hi Lee, Took it to 3 garages "not specialists" who said there was no problem... Also had it on a rolling road and again... found no problem.... Just worrying me now as it seems to really persist when hot... Im spending valuable £££'s trying to diagnose this and want to be spending that £££ on mods....

Any suggestions??

sorry your having problems mate you can check your plugs by taking them out 1 at a time then plug the lead into the spark plug hold it with a pair of pliers against something metal i.e head on your engine just above the exhaust manifold

get somebody else to crank the car over just 1 turn of the key and see if there is a spark

if no spark off of 1 of them then that will be the broken plug

by the way are u still coming to the rolling road?

Hi Steve,

I've had a rought time at the moment with the Evo... Firstly snapping one of the rear anti roll bar drop links, "have now had both sides replaced on Tuesday:D".

Now this (Possible Problem) may cause me even more ££££'s trying to resolve.

Am also looking to purchase a HKS Oil Filter and Millers or Silkolene 5w40 Oil, as she needs to be changed... Add onto the fact Xmas is round the corner with a misses and Lil' Un... Aint gonna be cheap mate....

I SO WANT TO COME TO THE RR DAY:razz:, But have other probs that are more immediate...:(

In an ideal world, i'd come to the RR Day, they would tell me the problem and i'd fix it... "Job Done"

I have other Mods that i want to install (and Buy) but am struggling this close to Xmas....

I'm gonna be optimistic and say YES i will be attending.... But in truth i just need to wait and see as to what happens....

Thanks
Steve

Does the engine behave normally when driving ?

Do you have different cams and pulleys fitted ?

And most importantly why have you not taken it to a specialist cos if the answer is yes to the above questions then there is no problem with it cos that's how cams are :)

A good bit of input guys!

Steveo, before I get into this, can I just ask you to answer the following questions please:

Have you been playing around with the ECU or pins???

How long has this problem been going on??

Did the previous owner tell you that he changed the ECU or had the car mapped???

What mods are in place already and do you have receipts???

Hi Lee,

The engine behaves normally during driving, its just when im stopped or in slow moving traffic.

Yes, it has Tomei Race Cams and pulleys.

There are no Mitsubishi specialists local to me, I work long and varied hours and getting time off to do this would be hard "But well worth it if i trusted where the car was going"

.... And it sound's very similar to the Evo with 272's.

Thanks
Steve

Hi El,

I haven't touched the ECU or pins... "wouldn't even know where it is"

The "problem, if it is a problem" has been on the car since i bought it.

The car was mapped in August last year when it had the following mods put on....

Evo 9 Turbo
Evo 9 Outlet Pipe
Tomei Cams & Cam Pulley Set
Walbro 255 HR Fuel Pump
CPR Boost Solenoid Kit
EKU-TEK re-map & Licence Fee

I have all the receipts for this and the other work that has been carried out on the car.

Hope this helps,
Thanks
Steve

Well then it I would say it's normal then and no need to worry

Bring it to the rolling road day and I'm sure plenty of people there will be able to confirm this :)

Lee is right buddy.

Russ may be able to give it a slight tweak on the day too to get it to idle a little more smoothly but it is one of those things that you just have to live with to be honest with you.

You could invest in a stepper if you wanted to, it allows the car to run at around 1500rpm and then gradually steps down to around 1000rpm which is handy when you are slowing down and moving off again constantly.

I am more than happy to come to the RR day, in fact i am looking forward to it.. I'm just worried that i'll pay the money and "Russ" will say that there is an underlying problem... Which ultimately puts me back to square on again...

El - Is a stepper a cure to the problem or merely a corrective? Ie. Make it better short term??

As this is my first Evo i want to make sure i get things right first time. (Hence my constant posting) Sorry guys:blush:
With my Scooby i had none of the above problems and somehow managed to leave myself out of pocket when i got rid of it... To the tune of £4k..

Thanks
Steve

I wouldn't say it was a problem mate. Idle like that is perfectly normal for an Evo with cams in and alot of people can't wait for there cams to be fitted just to have it idle like that.

Car will be fine mate and at least if there does turn out to be a problem which I doubt then at least your in the right place and with the right people to tell you rather than some garage that doesn't have a clue
