So first, how do you IV owners like the car, good chance to get one but wondering if I should be waiting for the 5 or 6. Hoping the 4 isn't a black sheep.

A couple local people talking about how the 1,2,3 were a better car than the 4 due to the engine being rotated and not being as strong as the early years? any merit to this kind of comment?

The 4 is my favorite for looks and suits 100% what I'm looking for in a car I would just prefer to stay away from it if in fact it is a dud year.

Will be nice to answer to some of the flack I'm hearing about the car. Then again I'm in Canada and we have no evo iv's so people are spilling stuff that they have read, i much prefer you guys who have ACTUALLY OWNED the car.

Thanks!

nothing wrong with the 4 fella! If you like the look get one, yes the engine isn't as strong as the 5 and 6 but the engine's got better with every evo! fsh is a must or lots of it since import! Or get a 4 with a later engine. The 4 engine can get crank walk some do some don't, but so can the 1 2 and 3's. Any engine can brake at the end of the day! If you like the 4 for looks get one! I love my 4! Most of the time lol :)

"fsh is a must or lots of it since import" hrmm?

The car looks like a joy to work on from what i've seen. Engine looks very accessible and not bad to work with. Now i'm coming from a 3000gt vr4 so any of you who have a history of them.......... ugz......

Absolutely love my 4. Normally i dont keep cars long but i reckon ill hold on to this for a while. Cant fault it other than usual second hand car faults that are unavoidable.

The iV is a good car. Shame it's let down by it's dodgy crank set up and almost floral seats :)

Ha the interior is a weird color alright

The seats in the 4 gave me awful back aches any other 4 drivers get this?

Do you guys feel its worth it to wait on a 5 or 6, it will be a year or two to come in. I'm not racing/tracking the car. just for my day to day car to have something unique and a blast to drive in.

It's very affordable with having sold my car. I just hate to look back and go "shit I should have waited for the 5". I respect and understand what you are saying about every year the car gets better but with so many vehicle there are brain fart years where you just find duds. This crank issue has me a little worried more than anything so maybe the question should be directed more to it. What kind of mileage to see it? Easy fix? How do you catch it?

thanks for the replies, i'm sure i'll keep the questions coming so bear with me,

and ya, the interior is ummmm. pretty?? lol

adding to my questions above, again more tales from the haters. Saying that because the 4 is from japan that it is meant to run on a 98+ octane????

adding question from me - i see it is a stock recirculating system. However many have the hks intake that people cap the recirculating adapter. Coming from a 3000gt which runs like shit without recirculation or an aftermarket MAF - what happens with this vehicle when you make it open atmosphere instead of recirc?

Go go 1000 questions

hi buddy love my 4 and have had no major issues in 1 1/2 years of owning :O) if your keeping it standard then the engine will be fine as the others have said if your looking to tune then i would look for a later engine swap but the 4 engine will take quite a bit of abuse but would advise uprating the bearings and rod bolts and have you importer/tuner check the end float on the crank befor you buy it .

good luck

you will probably have to get it tuned as soon as you get it to make sure it runs ok on your low ron fuel but yes its ment to run 98+

as for the recirc some run ok some dont . you can try a twin piston blow off valve but many say just stick to a after market recirc valve unless your after the blow off noise that is :O)

As long as the 4 engine is looked after and maintained properly then they can run as good as the 5 or 6 engine
Many stories of only being able to run 1.2bar boost or they blow but I know of a good few mapped to run 1.5bar boost :D
The crank walk issue in my opinion has been blown way out of proportion. There have only been a small proportion of these actually occuring compared with how many 4's are out there
I'd be more concerened about the mileage on the engine and service history

To conclude I'd say that if you prefer the 4 over the 5 or 6 then go for a 4. Just by a nice looked after model and with as much history as you can get. Do not be put of by others opinions of the 4

Adding to your other questions

All the jap import evos are mapped to run on jap octane fuel so the higher ron rating !!!
You are better of running it on the highest you can get hold of and maybe add octane booster.
Do you have a RON rating or AKI rating showing at the pumps?

Evo's run best on a recirc but you will have little to no issues running a VTA bov or none at all. Its just choice :)

sounds good, appreciate all the feedback. going to do some research on the 4 to 5's engine.

couple simple bits

Stock boost is?
safe Boost with hks intake, downpipe, exhaust, EBC.
Better to get into something like the apexi avcr system or a true tune of stock ecu? Friend runs it on his R33 gtr so could have someone local at least that knows how to use. I'm completely unfamiliar with so maybe it has nothing to do with the tune.

Simple thing with me is if i dont know how or dont understand, i dont do it.

Stock boost 0.7 bar
Safe boost 1.2bar but if mapped well then 1.5 bar
Apexi avcr or similar or a 3 port solenoid to replace the std boost solenoid then controlled via ecu
EcuFlash to remap the std ecu altho on a 4 you'll need a later ecu from a 5 or 6 anyway
