High Temperature

Morning folks

I seem to be running at a slightly higher temperature over the last few times I’ve been out in the car. I’ve got a set of DEFI Gauges fitted and the water temp is showing 100 - 110 which is flashing the high temp light. It’s intermittent so might just be the sensor or wiring to the gauge. I’ve also noticed that when I first had the car when the fan kicked in i could really hear it blowing but recently although it’s working it’s not making the same sound. Do they have two speeds to the fans? And if so how do you check - Relays, fuses separate? :hm:. Temp on the dash is staying in the centre when up to temperature and not rising.

If the std gauge is not rising anymore than usual only your newly fited defi gauge is showing high temp then I'd suspect your wiring/gauge/sensor ... try using the oil temp gauge and see what it reads or swapping the sensor over

You should only be getting 90 on your water temp

Its not newly fitted gauges as they were fitted when i bought the car.it used to sit at around 90 and rise a bit in a hot day ( which you would expect) they you could hear the fan cutting in and temp would lower.Any ideas what the oil should be sitting at under normal running conditions as this would give me an idea if the engines running hotter.The main thing is there two speeds to the rad fan ? im sure i read somewhere its got a low and high speed so it might be the high speed relay isnt working ? or a resistor of some sort ?.my other option is a new sensor but at £70 i would like to eliminate other first.Im not using the car much so no real problem but would like to get it sorted out before i do some damage if there is a problem.

TBH, I'd trust the defi over the stock gauge any day. Stock gauge is as usful as a plane without wings.

I think if I remember correctly the oil temp should read the same or maybe 1 or 2 degrees lower

whats the temp reading on a steady motorway cruise?

is it reading high all the time or just when moving slowly, traffic, stationary etc.?

Hi

No just in traffic or slow moving but wont go to say 120 just hovers around the 110 range but also wont drop to 90 which im sure it used to even in traffic :hm: Still need to check if the fan has two speeds does anyone know if this is true ?

The fan is stopping after the temp has dropped but it takes a whlie longer than i remember.Ive checked all the usual places ,fluid ,radiator leaks ,water pressure etc but cant seem to find a reason why the temp is slightly highter now.I'll try to see if i can test the temp probe for the Defi system to see if its faulty.Im going to check the wiring for the fan also this weekend to see if its possible its two speed which would explain the symtoms. This would bring the temp down quicker and probably lower which is why i didnt notice in the past.I will let you know my findings .

just a follow up on the problem...

Fault was high speed relay was faulty which was not allowing the fan to spin full speed.This i presume was causing the teperature to stay higher than id seen in the past.For info ...There are two relays one for high speed and one for low speed on both the rad fan and the air con these are controlled by the ecu to come on at different temperatures.Under normal driving the fan would run on slow speed untill at around 100 it kicks in the high speed and the air-con fan is how i see it.
