Hi all. Just registerd on here. As you can probably tell from the name i've got a Cossie. It's an Escort and is fairly standard but in need of some TLC. It's going off the road in March when insurance and MOT are out. I've got lots to do to it and mean time am looking for a second car. Thats why im here. I fancy an Evo. Maybe a 4 or 5!?. As im more knowledgable on RS's i thought id try here for advice and maybe see if there are any up for sale. If there are any pointers that you can give when it comes to buying a 4 or 5 then please feel free to let me know. I see i cant look at pictures on the for sale board until i've posted 5 times, so dont be surprised if you see a couple more posts .

Look forward to seeing some nice cars and maybe even finding the right one for me.

Welcome aboard!

The main things with the 4 5 and 6 tends to be the AYC can be problematic.
Other things are Breaks, Clutch, smoke and service history. The same as any high performance turbo car.
4s can suffer from crank walk which is bad if it happenes.

But really if you get a well treated one they are bullet proof!

dont forget if you are looking at an evo rs they dont have the comforts such as eletric windows climate control or airbags, as these were stripped out for weight savin measures

Cheers lads. Faulty AYC will result in what symptoms? and as a Cossie owner, i've never had to think about what an import is. Are all Evos imports or are some original British cars? What kind of things should i look out for if looking at an import and will insurance quotes differ for an imported model? So am i right in thinking that a 4, 5 or 6 will have different variants, ie the RS mentioned already? Forgive my ignorance and thanks for the help guys. Oh, and crank walk????? Whats that?

After some internet snooping i've discovered that crank walk is the same as end float. Dont all engines have the potential to suffer end float? or are the Evo engines more prone? or is it just 3-5's?

In theory all engines have the potential to do it but 1-4 are very prone ie most engines do it.
But for most of the engines its not a problem. The bearing wear to accommodate it. But it can become quite a problem.
5s and onwards dont really suffer from it hardly ever.
