Hey, considering an evo....

Hey Guys,

Im currently an MX5 MK1 owner and currently thinking about selling up and buying an Evo 5. This is mainly because I keep spending money 'modding' the MX, however its starting to feel like a waste because to bring the car to the spec Id be happy with would be bloody expensive (and wouldnt raise the value of the car that much),so why not buy a car that already has a high spec...


I have a budget around £5k for the car and the insurance, ive checked a few different places, is only about £100 more a year than the MX. so it seems a no brainer.

I appreciate the running costs of an Evo will be MUCH higher than an MX5, however im spending a couple of hundred a month doing random things to the MX atm - id feel much happier spending this on a car that has the stats to warrant the cost.

What do you all think? Could anyone point me to a 'Buyers guide' or similar?

Don't blame you for wanting to make the move, just got my V and it's brilliant.

5k is ok money for a V you may find yourself having to hunt around a bit for a good one.

My biggest concern after plenty of reading was rot underneath! This led me to saving as much as possible to increase the budget and spend more on a "good" well looked after car.

If you have a search around the web there's loads of info knocking about.

Personally I'd save another 1.5k then stick a wanted ad up for a nice V or VI and then buy on condition, history etc. that's what I did on the "other" forum and got lots of responses from the people wanting to sell but not had it in them to do a forsale thread.

Helpful info there, essentially £5k is my goal but if I see a 'special one' ill pay the extra.
Just had a quick look at that guide and its pretty comprehensive!

Ill have a proper read when im back home,

what's the general consensus on imports?, I wanted a UK model, but if I accept imports the options seem to increase...

V's are import only.

VI's where the first model with "uk" models named ralliarts.

They go for more money but are slightly less insurance. Goes back to the Rot problem though as the car will have spent all it's life in our harsh winters and road salts :shock: You also won't get one for 5k will be more like 6k+ for a ralliart VI.

I could have bought a VI or even a cheap VII for the money I gave for my V but like I said I went totally on condition and history.

For a clutch and a AYC pump then tyres then a forged engine build....

You will pick up a V for £5k no problem. Finding it will be more of an issue. Expect to view a few and don't buy the first one you see is usually a good mantra to live by.

Haha yea but it'd be worth it on a solid car, instead I'm wasting money fixing rust or leaks etc....

Altho I think most would go into the tank ;-)
