Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone can help, I'm a proud owner of a UK model EVO 6 TME which i'm having a slight issue with, I've tried googling the issue and checked forums thoroughly however cant find anything about it, I'm just hoping i'm not the only person having/had this issue.

So here goes, more and more frequently now i go to start the evo and everything is normal, all the lights come on, on the dash, the turbo gauges light up and the stereo comes on, so that's ignition on, then I go to start it and all I get is a click and what sounds like the fuel pump priming however no crank. I've found out this is the exact common issue with some EVO 8, 9 and 10 but it always turns out to be a faulty clutch switch, well the 6 is not new enough to have depress clutch to start function? so there is no clutch switch!? (I'm assuming)

The only thing that I've done is replace the battery, then the problem started? It seems like its a immobilisor issue or maybe the starter motor but the thing is if i persist eventually it'll start, once it cranks it starts instantly. people with the clutch switch issue say by rolling it back and trying again it'll start, this doesn't work. I just have to wait until it feels like cranking. its obviously an electrical issue as I don't have to bump or jump start it, it'll randomly just go, i used to be able to switch the ignition off and on quickly and it would crank but thats starting to not work more and more. was stuck in a sainsbury's car park for 20mins trying to google it the other day.

Btw its serviced regularly, only used max of twice a week for a round trip of a maximum of 50 miles, otherwise is garaged, sometimes not used for more than a week.

any ideas/information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Dave.

Unplug the clutch switch to eliminate that.

At first thoughts it sounds like battery but if you have replaced it and its showing good voltage then as above check connections on starter

Thanks for the replies guys, I originally replaced the battery as the other wasnt holding charge then the issue started. i thought it could be a faulty battery however everything lights up well and it will just randomly turn over after a while, sometimes a long while. I'll check the starter motor hasnt come loose at all and if need be replace it, just didnt want to spend the money if there's another known fix.

When you fitted the battery did you key the reminals and clean them? You should always use some wore wool or something to scratch up terminals on new batts or it makes poor contact

Not sure about clutch switch, easy to check though, look on the clutch pedal arm and it will be quite clear to see, if it is the clutch switch could be as simple as your not pressing clutch all the way down maybe. I disconnected mine, just unplug it if you have one and see if it makes life better

Afternoon people, Just wanted to place a quick update on this thread as unknown how annoying it can get when your searching a fault that you find someone else has previously had however not said how or if it was resolved. Firstly thanks everyone for the response, saved me quite a bit of money in the end. I removed all earthing straps from the engine bay and battery, cleaned and roughed all terminals used new washers and bolts and so far so good! Starts each and every time, well it has for over a week now so hopefully it'll continue that way.

Thanks again,
Dave.
