Alright chaps, pretty much decided I want an Evo but dunno which one to buy

Could do with some sound advice and guidance to get me going, or some pointers to the right threads as no doubt it's all been said before

Wouldn't mind keeping to my 15k budget but you know how easily THAT can go out the window :D

So, over to you lot - cheers!

With your budget I'd buy a high power fully forged build car, but an older one and track it.

Can't help you much more without knowing your intentions for the car, use road/track,are you going to mod or keep standard? Which cars do you like the look of?

Are you figure hunting or styling??
Or doing it properly and actually driving it (geof  )!!

Nice and clean 9 or a totally mental 5 is what I would spend that much on :D

I was thinking along those lines at first- getting something bomb proof, with all the problems ironed out, to build on - but dunno enough about the Evo world yet so bit worried about buying a nail. What would be a good starting point for this option? Get a 9 with a forged engine etc.?

I would like it for fast road and tracking. Cos never tracked a car before, thought one of these would be best place to start... are they really as reliable as people say? Assuming I look after it properly of course

I've been looking for something a bit special for a while, but what's sort of tipped it the evo way was that I saw a 9 FQ-340 the other day and thought "**** it - I'll stop pissing around and get an Evo!" Balls out performance, no messing around. But there's soooo many to choose from I'm wondering stuff like "is the Tommi Makinnen ltd edition a good classic to go for... does it offer good all round performance and handling as standard because of what it is?" OR "shall I go for a X cos it's newer, got the latest in engine design, g-box/diff and drive train, will prob have lower miles on it etc?" Or is that last one a load of rollocks? Or is the X just like any car, i.e, the 2010 is the one that's solved all the niggles from the 2008 so best go for that... except I can't afford it !!!!!

Sorry, as you can see, I've got a lot to learn

Your best to try some and see how you feel yourself as they are very different to drive.
The X is a nice car to drive and would be good to live with but feels very different to the earlier models and I found it lacking in something.
The older models 4-6 'feel' faster so are more fun but you have to be prepared to live with the downsides of a 15 year old car as although they still look great on the outside they are a bit of a time warp once you get in and there are obvious wear and tear issues, even if a car has been forged and loads of bits chucked on it its the little bits than can still give you niggles.
I had a 9 FQ360 and loved it, it was a great car with half leather interior etc. and only the exhaust and a remap giving around 400 brake but then even 9's are getting on a bit now so a lot of care has to be taken buying them as well.

X's do have slight reliability issues, so you'll spend all of your budget and some thing may go wrong.

You'll never be problem free even with a well built high power car.

Like chubbysdad said with the IX easily achieve 400/400 safely. You could do the same with the 7/8 too.

My advise when buying anything is dont scrape the barrel with the newest but cheaper cars, I'd always buy the pricey older cars that have been pampered :)

Try and leave some money spare too, just in case it has a few niggles to start with, there's always something.

Exactly as above...

You could by any car not just an evo and then find issues with it.
Your asking the age old question of where do I find the perfect car that will run forever without problems. That's never going to happen.
Don't blow your whole budget on the 'one' as you'll know doubt need to fix or change something sooner rather than later.

Your better of test driving some.
Posting the adds up here.
Getting someone who knows Evos to take a look with you.

1st would be what you like the look of.
2nd finding one that you like to drive and could live with
3rd upgrades/mods to suit what you want.
4th you can pretty much do anything you like to an evo to make it do, feel, look what you want

Alright mate, soz for mass delay getting back - I dunno where the time goes these days :wtf:

Thanks for the reply anyhoo... exactly what I asked for - good sound advice from someone who's been there

I've been up close and personal in a X 300 now and that was OK. Can't believe you don't even get a skinny spare  I'm honing in on the X more at the moment and reckon I'd go for the 330 GSR with the HKS gear on it and the extra power, plus I'm pretty sure I want the SST which the 360 doesn't come with. Although I've seen a 360 for sale with the price coming down rapidly, so might bag me a bargain :awesome:

Heard owt bad about the 330 or the SST system?
Any of you purists dislike the SST, reckon it should be a proper stick?

I'm aware of the AYC problems and seen a load of guards for the pump that people are putting on. This is a worry but not putting me right off. Yet.

Saying all that, saw a YouTube vid by a bunch of Evo nutters who rated the IX FQ-360 as the best ever Evo, and I got to say I much prefer the look of the IX. But like you say CHUBBYSDAD, will it be too much of a time warp getting in it  I saw a nice example of one of these for sale as well just recently... might bag me a rocket instead  :) hahahaha.

Cheers to you other guys too, Rob and DDS789. Again proper sound advice :)

I know I'm going to get niggles n that and I've budgeted for that, but the flip side is what I love about these cars (not having owned one yet!)... you get soooo much for your money... it's designed for power, proper power, pretty much out of the box.

But this is going to be pretty much a weekend car for me so I won't wear it out to fast.

But we'll see about that :)

I've had a few car but I would say evo are very strong and they can handle a , where with the subaru I would also be worried with the engine going.,

By what I could gather the SST is fine but can be limiting when it comes to tuning because of the amount of power it can handle, there are bound to be options to upgrade the box/clutch ?? but I would imagine it would be costly.
I have never driven an Evo with paddles but the set up on the Gtr is amazing.
If you fancy a 9 at all now might be the time to try one while there are still so much really good examples to be found.
That was my thinking with my 5, I was looking for a 9 RS or a Spec C RA :whistling:
I had always fancied a 5 but as I was getting old enough they were getting old so I never thought I would, a bit like Cosworths.
When I found my mega clean one for sale I couldn't help myself and I'm glad I took the chance :)
