Hey everyone,

Ive been looking lately after selling my delorean into getting myself an evo 10. Ive had a test drive of one last sat (Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 2.0 GSR FQ-300 SST from Witham Garage) and really loved driving it. How ever ive been reading a few posts here and there about the reliability of the SST box, and hearing of so many needing replacement boxes either done via warranty or having to pay out a stupid amount of cash... Its putting me off a little, don't want a car that may end up just sitting around broken because I cant afford a new gearbox, lol.

Hi there,

From an SST owner (so probably a little biased) I would advise you to stick to your idea of an SST, Imo considerably better than the manual boxes (hence why they cost £3k more when new). I test drove both and (although there is the slight delay in first with the SST) I found it considerably better than the manual, the lightning fast changes and no loss of power of the SST allows you to concentrate on pointing the wheels in the right place rather than worry about which how long a corner is and if you need to drop a gear.

I wouldnt let the rumours of possible issues with the boxes worry you, 70% of 10's sold had the SST box so there is inevetably a few that have been driven hard and required fixing. My SST box was replaced under warranty (but I do let my Mrs drive the car :shock The issue is that Mitsi Uk technicians are not trained to dismantle the boxes so they just replace them :wtf: and return them to Getrag!

These days a good after market tuner (such as TRL) knows loads about how much strain can be put on the SST box and for less than £1k you can have the modifications required to have a 380-390 bhp car (getag rate the boxes to a safe 390bhp) which should be considerably faster than a 400bhp manual boxed cars:razz: & if it does go kerput they can rebuild and uprate it for you for a couple of grand.

I think you'll have to drive both to see which one suits you best mate.. I have an X 360 and the manual gearbox is fine. Didn't fancy an sst, not due to the dodgy box rumours, but because i prefer a fully manual car. (plus the 360 i wanted only comes in manual)

I've owned and driven 4 Evo's now, and the X is the nicest to drive by far. If you want raw power go with an earlier model. If you want a more smoother drive and power delivery, get an X

How would you say the x is in terms of reliability? Do they just keep on going?
