Mabey try taking the aux belt of and start it up that will tell you if it's out to do with the alternator or pulleys

If it's the crank on a 4 the only thing to do is scrap the engine and get a later one V onwards, crank walk is a serious problem with the IV block. Dump the oil and check for swarf in it,

Now now Craig. Stop the scare mungering. They are known for crank walk but don't have a major problem...

Op- possible tappets. Take rocker cover off and check

If a crank goes for a wander its a major problem is what I mean lol. Tappets will jus be a consistent tapping noise not bag of nails unless its sticking

confusing, I looked at a couple of video's about 'crank walk' on evo 4, but the sound is not the same as the ones on the video's I have watched , got some money to spend to try fix it but I also have the choice to by an evo 5, 43k miles for £6000, I have known the person selling the car for 7 years, which will be be better expense wise? evo 4 or 5?

If you have the money for a 5 then I'd get newer engine and forge it for half the cost. Then you'll have piece of mind of a new engine :)

Just wandering if its anything to do with your clutch as this can make your motor sound like a bag of spanners. The clutch springs come loss and rattle around.
Is it any better when putting your foot on the clutch.!
