Good news Ref. Service

Called Extreme UK today to book my service in for September (first one since buying the car) Had a chat with the guy about what was needed etc. Out of curiosity as they sold the car to the previous owner and have regularly serviced it I asked about the cam belt service and when it was due. Few minutes of digging later he told me that it was done 2 years ago when they had it for sale!!

Out of interest though. I have opted for the service that includes brake fluid change and coolant change. Obviously this is more expensive than just the interim servive they offer which is oil, filter, AYC. Would it be easy for me to do the coolant change and bleed and fill brakes myself?? This part of the service seems to add and extra 1.5hrs onto the interim service and an extra £100 ish.

If I was to do the brakes and coolant myself I'd still get the ExtremeUK stamp in the service book but save a fair bit of monies!

with the coolant drop the bottom hose off, then wait for all the fluid to fall out then replace hose and fill with a 50 50 mix of anti freeze and water.

With the brakes get a friend to help. take the cap off the brake fluid bottle fill with brake fluid then put the car on axle stands, then crack open the 10m bleed nipple on the back of the caliper, get ur mate to press he's foot on the brake and hold down if the fluid spits then it will probably have air in it, so stighten the bleed nipple and release foot brake and repeat process till the fluid flows normally.

Whislt doing this process keep an eye on the level of the brake fluid cos you will need to top it up

Take the radiator cap off, start your engine and leave to run till hot and you should see the water bubbling, once it stops bubbling put the cap back on, that way all the air will be bled out the system

How easy is that!!! On my MG it had a few bleed nipples in the heating pipe work. Cheers!!

Get yourself a 5lt can of corma extreme green coolant.

No need to remove the bottom hose as there is a simple drain plug on the bottom corner of the rad. Undo the rad cap first though to let the air in the top so the water flows out the bottom.

Now slowly pour in half the coolant 2.5lt then top it up with water. Best to have the car facing slightly up hill as this enables water to fill the top hose before it comes it the top of the rad and also helps most of the air to escape.

Replace cap and go for a little drive then allow to cool and check the level. Rad should be full to the brim.

You can then refill the bottle of coolant you bought with water and this will leave you with a perfect 50/50 mix of top up coolant to do it again should you do any work on the cooling system in the future and require a top up.


With regards bleeding brakes there is a order you need to follow with regards to which caliper you bleed in which order which I will try and find

After changing my brake fluid yesterday, I thought I'd put all the info I found useful and others had posted in one place. If anyone can add anything, that would be great.

- The Gunson Eezibleed is useless on the Evo, it doesn't come with the correct reservoir cap for the Evo, and even modifying a second hand reservoir to fit the Eezibleed plumbing doesn't work, as the reservoir doesn't seal well enough to handle the pressure.

- Syringe out the old fluid from the reservoir and top up with new fluid. This will greatly reduce the amount of time it takes to bleed the old fluid out of the brakes.

- The brake calipers will gravity bleed, all you need to do is attach a tube to the nipple (which took the largest diameter pipe from the Eezibleed kit) turn the nut 180* and the fluid will drain very slowly. Make sure you keep the reservoir topped up with fluid as getting air into the system is bad news. It took around 10 minutes per side to gravity bleed my 8.

- The nuts on the bleeding nipples are 11mm, so you'll need an 11mm spanner (ring spanner seems to work best) to undo them.

- The order to bleed the calipers for cars with ABS is as follows:

1. n/s/r outer nipple
2. n/s/r inside nipple
3. o/s/f outer nipple
4. o/s/f inside nipple
5. o/s/r outer nipple
6. o/s/r inner nipple
7. n/s/f outer nipple
8. n/s/f inner nipple

- The order to bleed the calipers for cars without ABS is as follows:

1. n/s/r outer nipple
2. n/s/r inside nipple
3. o/s/r outer nipple
4. o/s/r inside nipple
5. n/s/f outer nipple
6. n/s/f inner nipple
7. o/s/f outer nipple
8. o/s/f inner nipple
