Gearbox problem

Hi, I think I've got a gearbox problem.
In reverse the car seems to jump and there is a loud banging noise. Going forward there is a bit of banging but not much. There is nothing with the front of the car jacked up and both wheels off the ground.
Checked the CVs they seem OK.
I don't want to go out and buy a gearbox and find it's not the problem.
The guy I bought the car from this year said he had changed the transfer box.
Grateful if anyone has any ideas.

Could be a number of things in your drivetrain. A video would probably help us help you.

Thanks for your reply. I know its difficult to work out what's wrong. So far checked CVs and the spider bearings on the propshafts.
