Hope some one can help! My gearbox has decided to throw a tantrum
and won't go into 4rth! I was driving normally at the time, Infact it's not and a good blast in a while plus I've never launched it etc! The car has done 45k miles and it's a 6speed 8MR uk model! All other gears work fine, just won't go into 4rth!

I don't know whether it's fixable or best to just replace with another 6speed or 5!

Any help would be really appreciated!

Hi m8,

Knowing the 6 speed chances are something internal has gone wrong with the box. Only real thing you can do without removal is to drop the oil and look for any large debris. Also remove the linkage and see if it goes in by hand on the selector tower.

If still no joy, the box will need to be removed and repaired. Not engaging usually means that its either a bent selector fork, damaged teeth on the selector ring or obstruction of the syncro/baulk ring. More commonly they strip the gear, but when this happens they can easily engage 4th, but hit the accelerator and you go nowhere!

5 speed conversion is no too bad, grab a box with rear mount, the complete linkage and often overlooked the centre console from inside the car. (the 5 speed tower sits higher and than 6 speed so the trim doesn't quite clip in.)

Overall it could be a easy fix for a transmission specialist, but if its shot I would consider the 5 speed conversion.

Where you at fella?
I have a 6 speed box that I was told was knackered by a certain trader...... It ended up being a fooooked wheel bearing

The box was taken to a gearbox specialist and checked over and a report made
Gearbox is 100% and still at the garage......2 years later

Not got the time / effort / energy to send it via courier etc but you can collect /inspect

Thanks very much Rob very helpful :)

I'm up Aberdeen way so a bit too far unfortunately, thanks for the offer though:)

This is where it gets weird. Went a wee drive today and it goes into fourth fine . Pretty chuffed its working as it should again, possibly something got jammed or stuck?

Cheers
