front diff bolt failure

i have noticed this strange knocking noise on a full right hand lock and when coming out the garage also on a full right hand lock but also driving up a slope the knock could again be heard but also the car seemed to jump around at the front almost as though the front wheel was about to fall off.

so after a chat with antony@indigo-gt we agreed it must be the diff bolts had snapped so as i had the day off instead of a day tinkering with odd jobs on the car i decided the transfer box was going to come out and here is what i found

as you can see the bolts havent actually snapped which they are prone to doing but they have come loose by around 3-4 turns which is obviously not good and clearly the assembly is on the move and coming apart as can be seen just under the head of the bolt the top 3-4 threads are worn flat

new high tensile bolts are on order from antony@indigo-gt so soon as they arrive it will all be back together and the car will then be sorted

my car was in with a mechanic for a service and when i got i back off him it was exactly as you described i thought it was a drive shaft and on right hand lock i brought it straight back to him he tried to tell me it would be fine!!

i told him that he will have to sort it out cos it was perfect before i gave it to him he told me a bolt had sheared off in the transfer box probably the same thing happened eh??

i thought that one of his mechanics had dogged it how does this happen lee??

the bolts are prone to snapping due to the fact they arnt strong enough for the job or in the case of mine and some others they just work loose.
could turn them with my fingers they were that loose

have ordered some 12.9 high tensile ones from ant so will be thread locking them in so it dont happen again

at least you can do the work on your car yourself and sort it how did you learn about the ins and outs of an evo as its not your profession??

have been around evos now for 2 1/2 years and always fiddled with cars since i could drive just like i always used to mess with my bikes as a kid

me neither. spent 3 hrs on the job so far, another couple hours to put it back in 5 hrs in total would cost around £500 at mitsi dealer.

cost me £10 for the bolts and gave me something to do for the afternoon

great attitude to have i was thinking of doin an apprenticeship as a mechanic but it would be too hard to start back on the 1st year rate

Yea but you might regret not doing it in years to come.

I couldn't do it for a living. It's more of a hobby for me and I know the work is done properly if I do it myself and nothing left untouched

They are the slightly stronger 10.9 ones can't seem to get 12.9 anymore, wonders if they were just a myth lol

Postage be expensive that's the only thing. Loosing faith in Royal Mail do will have to be recorded delivery

I'm experience this but only a few times while turning right.. and not on full locks only regular turns.. again not all the times.. diff bolts failure?
