Finally old enough for an evo, but don't know what to do!

Hi,

I can now finally insure an evo without selling my body. I am now getting my Stage 3 Corsa VXR ready to sell and looking at evo 7,8 and 9s. I prefer the 9s, but is there any real benefit to having one instead a 7 or 8 with 9 bumpers? Also, I want a tuned one, what is the most practical/fun amount of power/torque without having so much it's useless. I was thinking about 500bhp and similar torque. Would ideally want one ready done as I found I sunk so much money into the Corsa and won't retrieve any of it. If I did it myself, how much am I looking to spend to get that sort of spec. Was looking at stroker kits aswell, or are these pointless when not in search of MASSIVE power. All help is appreciated, I just don't know what to look for in Evos, Corsa's I know inside out.

Cheers,

Kirk.

Where are you based first Kirk? Evo 9 runs Mivec over the Evo 8,

Stage 1 mods on 8/9 should see you 400/400 mark as rule of thumb

500 requires forging and deeper pockets

I'm in Great Yarmouth.

I had seen that somewhere, what are the pros/cons of mivec?

Do you class stage 1 as just exhaust, intercooler, induction and remap?

Yeah, that's really why I was thinking of getting one that's already done, coz you can buy one already done for around that price.

mivec is vairable intake cam timing, pretty much with stage 1, tbh coming from a corsa to a 550bhp evo is a big step

I just had a look on your NTS page, that looks interesting. So am I right In thinking thAt I could get any model eg. 260,330,360,etc. and do the mods as said, plus maybe fuel pump and injectors and you can map it with antilag, switchable maps etc. and I'd have 400/400.

I take it 400 is a nice driveable figure? I was just thinking a bit higher coz my mate has a 444/430 scooby and it wasn't quite as fast as I expected.

If you want 400 BHP+ then you're better getting the IX as it's a bit stronger out the box and the MIVEC makes it easier to tune. As for the starting model, you're right in that it doesn't really matter what you get, nothing of importance or value is done to give the models their respective power. 400 is certainly drivable, but...meh...I had about 380 in my old VIII and you could feel the thing twist in the corners with the extra torque. When you take a car beyond what it was designed for you can't expect it to be perfect. If I wanted 500 BHP I'd probably want a cage or something to help keep the geo straight too.

Pretty much, their are some exceptions ie the 260 will require cams etc, but 400/400 is used as a bench mark, these cars are getting on a bit now so rod metal fatigue is becoming more an issue, for the 8/9s ive mapped on stage 1, ive seen anywhere from 370-420 depending on spec

You can get a 500bhp 8 for around 14k at the mo. taking a stock 1 to that will reqire about 10 got the car then a further 10-15 on mods if you do it properly.

1 thing I will say though. We have 2 evos, a standard tommi mak and a 500+ bhp IV. the mak is a pleasure to drive and touch wood has never been a problem. The IV in the other hand is a money pit and every time I drive it I'm waiting for something else to break!

I know our cars are a bit older but many of the components on our IV are newer thank most 8-9s. 500bhp is ok to drive IMO but it puts do much more strain on components than 400.

Welcome along pal. Good choice on the evo your after I would agree with above get the 9 and it's tougher engine box tubby ect. 400/400 is prob more a drive able usable power figure that will get your off the traffic light launch pretty awesome top end great for track and power curves keeping you in front of pretty much most on the road, 500 I would say is more track power but saying that there are a few people who use 500+ on the roads.
Just make sure there are receipts for the work or if there isn't receipts find out who carried out the work as there are a few good names in the evo scene, I see you have net Simon already and you may be able to get hold of them and they vouch for the map on the car.

Good luck with your search and keep us posted

You are quite right there to be honest Billy.

You've also got to think, in my opinion, are you going to/have you got the talent to drive something with 500bhp? 400 is very drivable I think, but our 500 bhp car will easily kill you if you arnt paying full atention.

My friend was also at a track day at snetty a few weeks ago in his little diesel Ibiza. He thought he was the tits as he got a faster time than 2 evos there with circa 400bhp. His time was 2.36 I think and they were 5-6 seconds behind. I done the same track on Sunday and was doing 2.22 laps with 300bhp.

At the end of the day it's upto you but what I'm trying to say is I'd prefer something I could drive to its full potential and not have to worry about it, if it was a road car.
