you should see some of the 7/8/9's that i have had the pleasure of killing

Indeed. There are some rot boxes out there. See, the paint is so piss thin it's no surprise at all. Hence me taking the rust prevention measures that I'm doing :)

the shitty thing is, most of the rust buckets are hiden from eye with ten ton of underseal and garages are charging folk for a "full" underseal and doing half a job, they just slap the underseal on show the customer the lovely black shinney crap and then customer things there good to go for the next 10 years...

This is very very TRUE! Absolutely the case in the Land Rover world and happens every hour of every day!

There was nothing wrong with my 9 but it wasn't really as clean underneath as my 5.
My 5 has clear wax oil now so that nothing is hidden, I know what can be hidden under that nice thick black under seal
My Subaru was a lot better done with it being a type UK, its a pity Mitsu UK never shelled out for the FQ's to be done the same.

mines a 4
never welded, never undersealed either

But my drivers rear strut top has a hairline crack which will be getting welded an then under will get cleaned, then hit with some anti rust paint, then undersealed

Undersealing

Hi

I have an FTO which are renowned for rusting on the rear end.
When I first got it I got 3 tins of spray grease and coated the entire
underside of the car including spraying it into all the box sections and inner wings, up around the tank etc.
I've done this every 2 years and No rust whatsoever has invaded my vehicle.

Stuff the underseal as I hate to see the thick black coating covering all sorts of possible horrors.
My Dad had a Triumph Stag and he used old engine oil but as it's
now found to be carcinogenic  I steered clear of that !
His old Stag is still running and still no rust so something to be said for it.

1 reason I bought mine is because it was so clean underneath with not a trace of underseal and had low mileage! I've since done 2 coats of paint on underseal when I first got it followed a week later by the spray on then 7 months later done another top up coat.

I've even had all the rear diff off when I changed it and done under that whilst cleaning the diff and poly bushing it!

I've had the car nearly 9 months now and only covered about 3,500 miles of that!
