ok i have a weird problem which i carnt get my head round

the boost was increased when i had the car mapped and now the screamer pipe doesnt work

everything is fine with vac pipes and stuff but i carnt understand why the screamer pipe has stopped working, if i put the boost controller on a lower setting the screamer pipe is back, but it doesnt work on the boost setting i need it to be, als the boost controller is maxed out to give me only 1.5bar

its a 38mm wastegate so am i going to need a bigger spring to give me more boost now or at least lower the controller for future settings

from what ive read and seen the wastegate only opens to release excess pressure so on high boost setting its hitting its max setting but not to much to move the spring in the wastegate? but on the other settings its overboosting to give me the desired boost setting for low boost hence screamer is working or have i got that wrong

if i havnt then for my screamer to work i need my turbo to be over boosting?

its annoying the hell out of me as its the noise from the screamer which i love and now without it the car just sounds bland :(

what turbo is it?

whats the boost curve like on high setting?

its on the standard evo 5 turbo, boost holds 1.5 bar all the way, but for me to get the screamr pipe to work ive had to drop the boost down to 1.3bar

not carnt get over 1.5 bar on the turbo at all, maxed out the boost controller

have you had a close look at the turbo and felt for shaft play etc?

the turbo should be able to produce over 2bar.

yeah no play in the shaft, doesnt smoke always produces strong boost just no more than 1.5bar, im thinking its the external wastegate spring thats too weak

if the screamer isn't.... well.....screaming then the gate is closed.

I'd take the pipe off the screamer and test to see if it will fly past 1.5bar (but thats me, I recommend caution if trying this yourself, for obvious reasons)

hi from my understanding you are holding the internal gate shut and using the external gate to control boost .

how are you holding the internal gate closed ???

and if the spring in the ext gate is to weak then you could max out the controller but very unlikly ??

what is the boost without the controller just ext gate valve :O)

yeah the standard actuator has been wound shut so the external wastegate controls teh boost

havnt tried with the boost controller off tbh

the way im seeing it is the screamer pipe only works when its releasing excess boost to stop the turbo from over spinning, hence on low boost setting it works, but when its on 1.5 bar the turbo snt over speeding hence producing the 1.5bar constanly so this is telling me the wategate is working fine as i should but becuase the turbo isnt producing no more than 1.5 bar it wont open the screamer

as sponners said .

people winde these turbos up over 2bar so you have another problem some where .

so how have you wound the standard actuator shut ??

solid rod or just adjusted the actuator ??

are you sure the back pressure in the turbo aint opening the int gate just a little againts the spring pressure ??? bleeding off the boost

the car is how i bought it, the pressure could be opening the wastegate penny but if it is its very slight, ill double check this tomorrow, as far as im aware the wastegate is wound shut, but then its on a spring so pressure will open it id imagine

just a idea,

when i got my turbo it had had a ext gate fitted and the int one had a threaded rod holding it shut as the last owner had a simular problem to you ,

keep us posted mate

good luck
