Expect to pay for a evo IV (cheap)

Hello all,

In the next couple of months I am going to be seriously looking for a evo IV.

My current car is a e36 328 so should be a good step up.

Things I'm looking to know is what sort of price could I expect to pay for one ?
Not looking for anything super clean or powerful as would like todo some work on it myself.
Been looking around and seeing them as low as £2500
As long as the engine is sound and little/no rust

What should be looking out for, is there any common faults I should be looking out for ?

best advice i can give on buying a 4 is do some research on them, theres plenty of info on here, you will need to look into engine codes for the 4 and above as there are known probs with the engine on them, and if your paying bottom dollar for one then you better be handy with the spanners and engine building or have deep pockets. do you like the 5?

Cheers for that, I like the look of most ish... Of the evo's it's just money to get started having to get a big lump of money to get one.

Will start reading into common engine faults.

Anything else to look for chassis/running gear wise ?

Probably come across as a tight arse .... Well putting money into it after purchase I'm not too worried, after something some what quicker than my e36 so thinking 4wd and turbo and a Subaru well not for me.

Generally if you pay sod all for the car, expect to pay a lot fixing it. You MIGHT get lucky tho.

I'd expect to pay less if I'm fine with something which worn interior, paint work not brilliant

The problem with the IV's is not just that they might look a little tired inside and out. There are some great examples out there.

Crank Walk is common, they all suffer it whether it by minimal or excessive so the last thing that I wish on any IV owner is that they spend hard earned cash tidying it up and getting it to run exactly as they always wanted, only to then discover that the engine is more or less scrap.....

Hello mate I was gonna purchase an Evo 4 before I got my hands on my 6 , was gonna pay £2500 for it ,I liked the car as it was the rs version, but it had no history so I was told to walk away.bought my Evo 6 off an enthusiast with service history, he mentioned it was a good en as everything is tight and smooth,that went right over my head ,but he basically said you can get a GOOD tight Evo or you can blag a LOOSE Evo wich is basically bad news ! Fingers crossed for mine then Lol!my first track day is in 4 weeks ! Eeeek

Just done tad bit of research on 'walking crank' seems abit odd,
Is there no recall for this ? Seems tho buying a 4 you aren't really going to know the condition of the engine (crank wise) unless you can feel it through the clutch when going left hand bends ? ( just read this).

How could a 7k evo 4 be bette than a 3k evo, if it's a problem which them all, could the 7k evo go bang also just as easy ?

Yes indeed, unless the 7k IV has an VIII engine and plenty of top mods, then it might be worth a look.

The only real way to tell for sure is by having it up on a ramp.

They all have it, I have yet to come across one that does not....

Ok, so they All have the problem... What is the problem so to speak, they hit the crank sensor ?

Does the engine go bang or such ? There is nothing you can do to stop it ?

So are all evo 4's are going to go pop ?

This is sorta scaring me off an evo 4 and disappointing as a evo V is probably abit out of price range

They don't go bang.

They just need big end rebuilds every 40k IMO.

They used to fetch Ok money a long time ago untill Crank Walk became a topic that caught everyone's interest.

It was a flawed design that was revised in the V and then became a thing of the past.

If you look at this way, an Evo III Will fetch the same, or more money as an Evo IV for a reason. In the Evolution circle, that is a step back and not forwards....

The Evo I to IV have the same issues.

no there isnt any recall on the crank walk its just a weakness with the engine unfortunatly. you can prelong the outcome but more often than not its inevitable. cure is a later engine, ecu and injectors and fuel pump and then you be happy

What sort of money would I be looking at for a IV ?

If your mind is set on the IV, it really needs to be one with a V onwards engine.

Rebuilding or a rebuilt IV block is still a Iv block at the end of the day.

you can pick up a 5 or 6 standard engine for about 800 quid so as long as its not rotten you could always buy a cheap 4 and a seperate engine and pop it in if you like getting grubby
