I have a full magnex exhaust system on my 7. Now i was stopped by a traffic cop the other night for a routine check:( when i was stopped i was going 25-30mph. He looked around the car trying to find something wrong checked my details then breathalysed (hope it spelt it right) me all was ok but then he told me that my exhaust was to loud:confused: can any one tell me the law regarding the db limit for a exhaust? as i ask him and he could not give me a straight answer:mad: He told me to go the the local police station to get it checked.
Any help would appreciated. Thank you

No did not upset him, answered all him question and was polite. Wanted to say something but bit my tongue. Fair enough if i was driving like a ass and speeding.

Surely to give you a fine, he must know the legal limit and it must be tested properly, cant just issue you a fine because he THINKS its to loud.

I don't think there is actually a legal db limit. For mot its the testers descretion, i've never heard of a limit that the police test for. Just sounds like he was bored and had nothing better to be doing.

I thought the one with the oval back box was the quiet one. The round box one is proper noisy ! :)

When you go visit them, get a bung in it if you can and ask VERY politely if there is a law that states the exact db limit for an exhaust. You did right by not getting angry :)

You could put a cat in it if you haven't already got one. Or I know indigo-gt had some baffled decat pipes for around £50. May take a couple db's off :)

I think the legal limit is 70 something dbs. Most MOT stations though do not test this. I have just swapped my Blitz Nurspec for a magnex system as the Blitz was 110 dbs on my car which is too loud for any track or Nurburg. I think the Magnex will be approx 90-95dbs.
I contacted the local circuit and they kindly tested my car for free when they had a track day on. Will test again with the Magnex
Good luck

I've seen this talked about before and was mentioned the limit was 70 something db but the standard hks super dragger as fitted by Mitsi is louder than that so its all a bit of a grey area.

Legal limit is 76db and an extra db or 2 for common rail diesels (read this info but cant find it again).

Sound is one of them areas where they can do you for anti social behavior, even without any real work.
