Evo X ASC / ABS Problems and Diagnostics Recommendations?

Greetings all :handsup:

Long time reader, not big on posting, really would appreciate some advice and help from fellow owners.

I've got a 2008 EVO X FQ300 SST which I absolutely love. Completely standard, use it as a daily drive. Me and the wife are complete car nuts and have 8 between us, including Land Rovers, classic cars, and a BMW-based kit car I built in our garage.

The Evo:

About a year back I developed the dreaded S-AWC pump failure. I didn't have it fully and accurately diagnosed, but it matched all the symptoms and the established write-ups; and the associated price tag for repair convinced me to let it sit for a while. And the car has been essentially fine for about a year. No biggy (as such) although I hear that Mitsi have extended the warranty for 10 years for this problem? Is that right?

Then, over the weekend I decided to take it through a drive through car wash (being a bit lazy and it is winter over here) and now I've got a whole host of new and interesting errors :shake:

It happened as I was driving along the road after the car wash - actually in quite a slow and saintly fashion. First the ASC logo came on in a sort of "you're skidding but don't worry, I got this" kind of way (even though I was doing 15mph in a straight line) and then afterwards both the ABS and ASC warning displays, complete with ABS lamp and ASC OFF lamp permanently on. D'oh.

My first thought was that the car wash had damaged or otherwise disturbed an ABS wheel sensor.

Fast forward to today, and I managed to call in a few favours and get the car into the Mitsi dealer, after work hours, quick code read, few beer tokens etc. and whilst he wouldn't let me into the workshop (elf 'n safety) he did say there were error codes on the wheel sensors, but don't worry that he's cleared them. Quite likely that an intelligent 4WD system didn't like being dragged through an arc car wash. Oops, my bad.

HOWEVER, after driving 200yds down the road they are back on again

SO my question to you - what next? Clearly I need to get my own diag kit, any recommendations? I can't keep stabbing around in the dark, trying to guess my own problems; nor can I keep going back to the dealer ££££££

Anyone experienced similar problems?

The last piece to this saga is that I have to do a circa 1,000 mile trip on Wednesday in the car - would those in the know strongly advise against such a heinous crime as driving without ABS?

Any help or advice appreciated. Thanks in advance.

If he had error codes for the wheel sensor(s) then I'd guess it needs a wheel sensor or more replaced. They are a b***h to remove in one piece but is an easy enough job to do yourself. Find a specialist garage to do it , stealership replaced one of mine under warranty and priced £175 just for one front sensor when mine needed replaced (showed exactly the same warnings you have). I have also had an AYC refurb as it was on it's way out.

Thanks for the tip - I'll ask around the other garages in the area and see what they can do. I'm quite near to enginetuner.co.uk and I know he does a lot with scoobies and other japanese makes - hopefully he's got some decent diag for Evo X.

I'd tend to agree with you - It does seem rather like a wheel sensor.

Wheel sensor needs replacing mate. Should be fine afterwards. The car wash probably didn't help when the big brushes were all over the car!

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

I finally managed to find a local dealer with decent diagnostic kit that didn't want to charge the earth - enginetuner.co.uk is local to me and has a "launch" diagnostic kit that you can plug straight in. only charged £30. The fault appears to be with the front right ABS sensor

Just need to find one of them now.

And as luck would have it these Launch diagnostic guys are also based in Plymouth and sell DIY/Amateur code readers as well as OEM/pro ones. Might drop in and see how much they retail for!

Just like to close out this tale by letting everyone know it was the ABS sensor in the end. I found a new one (aftermarket good repro part) for £40 which was a bit of a result. Pain to fit because the old one had to be drilled out, but all good in the end. The fault on the dashboard cleared itself after about 100yds of driving, although I expect a residual fault code will stay on the ECU until I have it properly cleared.
