If you can get it recovered I would be taking it somewhere else to be honest. Give Arnside motorsport (in carnforth) a shout on: 01524 761398 see what they have available and a price for the work, could be worth it. :)

There is not much that go wrong in the transfer box, a crown wheel and a pinion but are a matched pair. Easy to change and does not take long but before you resort to buying a transfer box give this guy a call as he does all our transmission work and is cheap. A lot cheaper than AMS. This guy does our bog boxes, transfer boxes and diffs for all evo's.

If the clutch has been replaced by a competition item, with different rate central damping springs, or no springs at all and the flywheel is a solid flywheel, then the damping between the crankshaft and gearbox gears meshing is 'not as factory' (or non existent) and on deceleration, some resonant backlash noise will be heard (probably around 3000rpm on lift off)

If the noise disappears, when the accelerator is lightly applied, then it's perfectly normal.

Using a slightly heavier 75W 90 grade gearbox oil than the factory 75W 85 can quieten the noise, but adds a little mechanical drag.

Hopefully this helps;
