If you look at the the stats (for what the official Evo stats are worth),the Evo is roughly 60bhp down but is around 200kg lighter and gets to 60 nearly a second quicker. Subtle mods and imo, the Evo has the ability to spank the m3 which is without spending a fortune, un-modable.

If you look on lap times, the m3 is 3 seconds quicker round the nurburgring which is nothing at all but so many factors could be in play for example weather conditions, the driver, how busy it is, temperature, tyres etc etc.

Not that it's much to go by but I have a E36 and will be picking up my first ever Evo tomorrow which will be a 6. Will let you know how it stacks up.

ok chris thats some good feedback ! see i'm looking at it from my position ,yes evo's are a great car
but its a very intense ownership theres always something that needs sorting to keep them tiptop
as looking at an m3 youve got more comfort and better reliability, overall a more stress free ownership

Think again dude. The m3 suffers from cracked sub frames costing a bomb to get welded up, smg models are notorious for failing transmission which doesn't always give any premature warning so get a manual! The vanos on them if it fails is a costly nightmare, servicing and consumables are expensive, rear springs commonly snap. Off the top of my head, they can certainly be just as much of a nightmare. Do a bit research if you do end up looking for one mate and know what your buying. No mistake, they are brilliant cars but can be a nightmare too.

German cars are brilliant cars. I got a rs4 on the strength of thinking I will have no trouble. In fairness, I haven't had much trouble but they do have their flaws. I have just put tyres on it costing £700, it is due rear brakes and disks so there is £1000. Yep a grand for back disks and pads :( I just had a bit of an overhaul done too. There were intermittent management lights flashing up. Booked the car in to an Audi specialist for a dyno and it was 100ps down. The engines suffer carbon build up after mileage and mine was no different. Cut a long story short, all in with map, carbon clean, diff and gear oil changed, it was a fraction over 2k :( The DRC on them fails costing quite a bit which i haven't had to do 'yet'. I am going to santa pod on Sunday doing a run what you brung. Hope I don't destroy my clutch and dmf.

Points being, pretty much any car be it RS, M, FQ, AMG will be fantastic for what they do when they do it well. It's when they don't do it, it's painful. Me personally, my pleasure in life is my motors. I don't earn fortunes, I just have a bad drug addiction. Have I regretted any of it? Nah, no way.

Happy motoring whatever you decide mate. Point to note, oil may only last another 50 year:rolleyes:

I went for the saloon, they weigh 1650kg. Mine is running 436ps and if i remember right, just over 450nm. It does pull really well but because it doesnt have a turbo, you dont get such a surge. You do get a kick just after 5000rpm and pulls really strong all the way up to 8250. Pretty good for a v8! It can be frustrating though because if your not ready, smaller turbo cars can make you sweat. After 90 or 100 though, its a completely different story. It will pull strong all the way up to about 186 (not my personal figure) i will have to find an air field to put this to the test. I have a habit of getting bored quick but its been different this time around. You can access all of the power just about all of the time with the 4x4. I have wiped the grin off 1 or 2 m3 owners on a rainy Sunday morning. Rain or snow, its always useable. I have had the audi 2 year now though and still love it. It handles really well for such a heavy car. I done 400 miles yesterday on the motorway and its just such a nice place to be. The boot is massive, more than enough leg room everywhere, 28mpg on a run. It's just so practical.

Hi mate, I've got an e46 M3 just now had an Evo 6 which I had at 387bhp. At that level the Evo would certainly be faster in terms of acceleration. After 100mph I'm not so sure, the m3 seems to pull the same way up to any speed lol.
I always seem to go back to performance bmws and then back to jap, my current situation lol.
But as it was mentioned comfort, speed, reliability and good handling can all be found on the m3. Also not being turbo it is very deceiving just how fast the m3 is.
Every now and again I like something raw which I find you get with the jap cars.

Cars are becoming more and more detatched all the time. After owning my TME evo for a very short while, it has reminded me what it's all about. My advice, if you can afford to hang on to your evo and get something more modern to use daily, do it and keep the evo for the dry weekends. I have been in and out of classic cars, I still have the e36 m3 and for it being 5 year older than the evo, even that feels modern but not in a good way. I never understood this 'quick steering' until I got back in the m3 after driving the evo for a week. For a 20 year old classic, the steering felt slow and sluggish compared to the evo. The m3 is a great car for what it is, good engine, great chasis and steering etc. I know they are 2 completely different cars but the evo is far more a drivers machine and I promise that you will miss that.

You raise a good point here. After driving forced induction, you get the feeling something is missing when getting in something without. The audi especially because the power delivery is so smooth. I'm sure if the same power was in a different car it would feel completely different. Top end of third takes no time and your at nearly 110mph and feels like your doing 60 or 70.

Hi guys,

I'm new on here and just joined.
Bought my Evo 2 weeks ago, got the MR fq340 running 395/360.
I've owned 2 M3's, an E36 evo which got front cover of Total BMW and sold my E46 M3 last year which I deeply miss to buy a house.
The Evo will run rings round a M3 but not sure about the motorway. My Evo happily pulls away from my mates E46 but in standard form I don't think there would be a lot in it mid range.
The build quality is like chalk and cheese between the two as well.
Just sold my R8 and fancied something forced induction but haven't really enjoyed it more as I have a problem with the immobiliser stopping me from starting it atm

some good comments on this subject, sometimes where you live dictates your choice of car
i hardly do any motorway miles the closest one is 30 miles away!
its mainly b roads round here which you could say is evo country, if i did more motorway work perhaps the rs4/m3 would
work for me?

It really is hard to say. I hate to sound biased here but the e46 or the evo wouldnt compete with the rs4 even on b roads in standard form. The e90 m3, different story again. All down to the day and your mood I guess. Not such a helpful comment for you mate ha. The beauty of cars in this line though, you can own for 6 months and not lose an arm and a leg in depreciation, if anything at all. I might have lost 1k on my audi in 2 year and probably gained that in 1 year on the m3. Should you get one and decide its not for you, hopefully you wouldnt lose out on much. Its the only way you can be sure.

nice comment think the rs4 is to heavy for proper b roads?
and as for cost the rs4 is a hell of alot dearer to buy and run than my 8k tme
