Had an evo 4 loved it! Was stolen ragged and then recovered with engine blown up! Melted piston and scorned block! I bought a new head, pistons and honed the block then sold cheap! Was a lot of work and stress seen as some other t**t had caused me this work! I then bought a lovely clean low mileage evo 5 to replace the 4 and had some power plans! A month after owning it and assuming the guy had really looked after it and serviced it regular the dreaded bottom end started knocking!! :wtf: the oil was filthy! I do not have the time or patience to deal with this now, I was going to sell cheap or break! Looking at the car it's too clean and I went far to secure this car! with my track day plans and power this was always going to happen at some point just didn't expect after a month an no track days! So what do I do, break the car, buy a 2nd hand evo 5/6 engine and drop that in, buy an 8 engine and drop that In or take my fuked engine out and forge it? What is most cost efficient? I'm thinking A forged 5/6 engine will be better than a standard 8 engine? I love this car but hate it at the same time! I just want advice help some direction as I'm growing disillusioned with it all! I've literally only just bully a 4 up to sell! I can pull the engine out myself and drop a new 1 in so labour isn't a problem! Please help

Sorry to hear about your engine mate! Not having so much luck with the evo's are ya :( iv got a evo 8 gsr 260ish ha ha soon to be around 400! :D all i can say is the 8 engine is pretty good and strong not had any issues apart from a coolant temp sensor, but if your gonna run a lot of power forged is always best! I think the best case would be a forged 8 engine but it all comes down to money.....a LOT of money! Ha ha hope you get it sorted soon mate

I would see if its worth spending the cash on it first. Maybe full motor rebuild top to bottem or a good sec hand motor with service history.

so sorry to hear that…i think to start with,go back to any reputable tuner there near your place and listen to what advice they can give you…calm down and settle in first..the 8 engine to start with will be fine and a bit practically stable and strong…also, don't spend too much money at the moment try to save some bucks if u can..dont worry it will be sorted soon..Goodluck

This is a situation covered hundreds of time buddy, research is your friend have a google and search about you'll find plenty of different scenarios.

Budget would be very useful?

End goal power wise?

Engine builds are almost limitless cost wise so be prepared for it to be very very costly when done properly  I would say easily £6K plus for a proper build

A good later engine £2.5K

Equivalent engine £1.5K

Very rough figures but you can see how important they are when it comes to budget.

Well budget depends really because I'm undecided weather I'd be happy with the 5 with an expensive engine build or would I prefer an 8mr or 9?? If i sold my 5 and added an engine budget with the costs mentioned I could have a lovely clean standard mr fq 340?? I just really love the look of the 5s and there heritage but also love the 8 and 9s! I also love the engine build threads and would love to do 1, but I don't have an endless budget and don't know if I'm committed to doing 1 And keeping the 5! I know if I did then that engine would be coming with me whatever shell/evo I'm currently with!! Would I enjoy and love a 5 with say a 400/500bhp engine more than a clean mr fq 340 say with slight mods?? I've been looking at 8/9s but am also worried about what I can do to a newer more expensive engine as I don't have much luck!!

Firstly if you have a straight, clean 5 and you prefer it to the newer type I would stick with it, remember even the later models (7-9) are starting to get on a bit and can have not only more wear and tear but more rot than a well looked after earlier model.
In an ideal world a low mileage engine from an eight would be the ideal low cost replacement but then as above its going to be at least 7 years old with the stated mileage being debatable and no way of knowing how it was treated in its past life.
A forged engine "should" be the safest bet but then countless people have been left feeling sour after spending a lot of coin on builds that have went wrong and the nature of a rebuild, or rather the stresses that are placed on it by other parts out with the warranty of the builder can lead to costs spiralling.
I have no plans to take my car any further than a 2.0 engine if the worst did happen.
It is a gamble either way, the more money you risk the better results you could have if everything goes to plan.
Good luck :)

Well I think I've decided although I change my mind on a daily basis! Ive sourced a reasonably cheap low mileage standard 6 engine so I'm told, but the guy seems genuine known on here and breaks many evos! To my delight he states the engine in question was only 2 out of 120 he's broken that still had standard downpipe and air box! It is a 6 engine with 48,000 miles and was a uk car!? He can also deliver and trade in my engine for a reasonable price so I'm going with this option for now so I can Atleast enjoy the car before I make a plunge 1 way or another! I did drive 200miles to collect this evo and 200miles home at 3am in the pissin down rain so we have a slight bond! The car is straight and true, although not undersealed it has no holes or major rot just a bit scabby here and there! I have full rust prevention and etch primer and a Dry underseal to go on! I need this engine in before the snow arrives, wish me luck
