Hi

I'm new to the forum and want some advice. I will be selling my Civic Type R later this year and cannot decide whether to get an Evo or a Scooby.

Everyone I talk to say the Evo is the better car, but I would really like your opinions. I will be looking to spend about £12000 on an Evo 8 or 9.

Thanks. :)

Hi and welcome
This is an Evo forum so we are going to be Evo bias but I do truely believe they are the better car. Mechanically they are better, lookswise they are better and they dont have the chavvy image. The Scoob does sound very nice though with the boxer engine.

Hi Nick

Everyone I speak to say the Evo is the better car. My mate did a rally track day where he drove the Evo and Scooby, and said he would take the Evo everytime.

Are there common things I have to look out for when buying a 2nd hand one? The last thing I want to do is buy a knackered Evo that's going to cost a lot of money afterwards.

try and get a low mileage EVO with lots of history. check for general signs of abuse, whether its evo or scoob with these type of cars there will always be bad examples. don’t rush and be prepared to walk away.

i looked at 8 or 9 Vi's before i purchased and i found a VI with 31,000 miles imported with 220 on in 1999, so def worth waiting for the one!

as to your choice, i have had scoobs for track cars and i had UK SPEC scoob but hands down EVO is the better car, more power and better handling and i think reliability. plus you don’t get the common Scoob engine note that’s drowns away all the time. EVO is practical and comfy and can put a child seat in and all you luggage.

both cars terrible on fuel.

i had a civic type r and enjoyed the car very much but these are something else!

enjoy, and let me know how you get on.

regards

Wes

Cheers Wes.

I will take my time until I find something worth buying. Maybe take someone along that knows Evos inside out.

I've wanted one for a long time now, so will hopefully get something special!

What are the service intervals and costs like?

service intervals on my 6 is every 4500 miles. the cost isnt too bad, the mitsubishi dealer in Doncaster is Ralliart as well so they do a proper ralliart service and it costs similar to what Honda charged for the type r servicing. they charge a lot though for a cambelt change, which is every 45000 miles or 4 years which ever the sooner. mine quoted me £650 plus the belt, so i did it my self!

thats something to look out for when buying, check when the timing belt was changed last.

also when test driving listen for a whinning noise from the diff, this could mean the AYC isnt working properly or the diff is tired.

an evo should feel solid and tight to drive. check the car pulls away well and the clutch isnt slipping, put it in 4th gear and slow to about 30mph then accelerate hard.

check oil is nice and clean and doesnt have water in it, i would stay away from a car that has had the boost increased or has a variable boost controller. if theres water particuls in the oil its a sign the head gasket is on its way and this is caused by excess boost.

all in all try and find a car that is as original as possible. thats what i did.

the way i see it Mitsubishi made a fantastic car with any one of the evo range, so why change it.

Enjoy!!

Wes

i also had a civic type r and it was a great car , but i agree the evo is something else , i waited and looked around a while before finding my blue tommy , it just has the presence on the road , street cred if you like ...we all have opinions but i like the brutish shape of a 5/6 evo ...what a car :D

A little late in the day, but EVO hands down!!!!

I deal with them both on a daily basis and I must say that we love the Scooby owners because most of them always need big money jobs done like blown engines to replace, big end bearings, rebuilds etc. Most common is detted engines on these. Number 3 piston all the time!!!

The Evo's generally come in for things like uprated internals, servicing, diagnostics or clutch jobs.

Those in the trade will agree.

I never recommend a Scooby as a new car, always an Evo.

I had a turbo 2000 once (this is going back to 1997, it was a year old). when I went to test drive it I thought the turbo was gone as the car had no power, when I said this to the owner he looked upset. I knocked him down on the price which he quickly agreed to as I paid in Sterling and was off with it, chuffed with the deal!!!

The next day I brought it to the Garage and took off the turbo, nothing wrong here I noticed. I ran a compression test, nothing wrong here either. I waited for my then Shudoshi (RIP) to come to the Garage for a second opinion.

He used to spend the nights drinking Saki and the days beating me if I messed a job up.

He arrived promptly at his usual time of just after mid day and when I told him what I was up to and why, he caned my legs and told me that I must be the one pissed!!!!

He asked as to my opinion on why they only sell Subaru in tractor show rooms in Europe and the U.S???

I told him because they are AWD and they probably are he best for farmers????

He caned me some more and said @because they are tractors you Baka Gaijin"!!!!
Which means: stupid foreigner/ stupid alien!!!
I exported it to the UK a few months after and made a nice profit too.

Just to let you all know, the number 3 piston has a 90% failure rate due to it being directly in front of the turbo, so on hard boost for prolonged durations it WILL fail and next to go will be the number 4 piston because it is next to the number 3.

i have a subaru gtb which was bullet proof
it did suffer from no3 piston slap which is common
being twin turbo it was a rocket ship
the newer 2.5 engines suffer from head gaskets
ive now got a evo 6 tme and so far it seems in a different league
yes the parts are more expensive to get but what the heck just enjoy driving the evo as it should be its a better car

Def the evo, they look like a demented murderer on a mushroom trip compared to the scooby, which looks like its guna cum give u a big weepy girly hug,the newer scoob has tried to copy its front end look from the evo to try n look more agresive! Ul get more car for ur money wi the evo too,all the on board goodies and more standard power, also a good base engine to start tweaking, plus there's way too many scoobys flying about, and too many that have been moded,I saw an evo 8 in red with full history, rear tints, carbon front lip, carbon vortex, full stainless pipe wi de-cat pushing 401 bhp for 12k,it was gone within a week.

Add to that, the Scooby is fast becoming a Chav's car, It is another reason to leave it well alone;)
