EVO IV Water temp

Not sure if its a problem or not. I noticed on the motorway, the water temperature on the stock gauge goes down to around 1/4.

When I'm sitting in stop start traffic its a bit under half way, but if i jumped onto a motorway it would go down quite quickly.

The car is fairly standard. Has an ally rad which is the only cooling mod...

Does this sound normal? Or is my thermostat on its way out?

Also, the car is my current daily, just wondering if 150 miles to a tank is about right? I do about 4.8miles to work and the same back every day, mostly in traffic. Before anyone starts saying I "shouldn't have bought an Evo if I'm worried about the fuel consumption", I'm not, I just want to make sure the car is running right and that seems fairly lowish to me but if its OK then fair enough


One more thing! - My live battery terminal looks like it has been chewed by a giant rat with metal teeth and is also very loose as half of its missing. Any recommendations on which one to go for to replace it?

my temp reads just under half most of the time, when driving it drops a tad lower

full tank i usually get 200mile with mixed driving, stop starting and going from 1st to 2nd then back to 1st is worse than 5th on the M1 doing 65-70

Hi Alex.

There could be 4 possible reasons as to why the temperature gauge is reading that way:

1.The gauge itself is faulty (unlikely).

2. The thermostat is on its way out.

3. The thermostat has been removed.

4. The Alloy Rad holds more coolant and therefore, the coolant temperature fluctuates more erratically than is to be expected.

Start with the thermostat, if it is in place, it's probably the culprit.

If it's been removed, I would not be surprised at all.

What fuel are you using?

Lastly, regarding the terminals, IMO:

Terminals are terminals at the end of the day so just try to get the best match possible. Every motor factor sells them, just make sure that the diameters are right.

Thanks for the reply mate, I will get a new thermostat and swap it out, may as well as there only cheap anyway.

I am using Shell VPower/Nitro, i always do in any turbo car I've owned.

There are 2 types of thermostats available. Don't go for the cheap generic version. Go on the coordsport website and buy a Jap/Asian Specification thermostat.

It opens up at around 17 degrees cooler than the rest, so allows for a bigger threshold which equates to better protection all round.

Does your Evo have an induction kit?

Ok, will take a look.

Yeah it has an induction kit and has been mapped to 325bhp. One thing is it does have the pops and bangs mapped in which is obviously dumping fuel in on the overrun so i will probably get that removed as funny as it is scaring people the novelty does wear off.

Also i noticed that there is a bit of oil coming out the plastic recirc on the seam. I read that it is quite common for them to leak boost if running any more than standard. Any recommendations on a replacement?

The Forge Recirculating Valve is a good upgrade.

From what you have just told me, the fuel efficiency is about right on your Evo IMO.
