Evo 9 ayc gone, no lights on dash

Hi. I bought my evo 9 a few months ago. When I bought it the PO told me it had a mechanical rear diff put in. Tbh I'm no mechanic and was probably in over my head a bit, but I looked through the paperwork and saw some work had been done including a new gearbox put in, the car drove like it should as far as I could tell so I bought it. He said the acd lights on the dash didn't come on because of the diff and I had no reason to doubt him. I've had a look under the car and the ayc pump and plumbing from the back is definitely gone so I know something has been done down there. Now I know a little bit more about the car and have spoken to some people in the know I'm starting to think everything isnt as it should be and I should start to get ontop of the diff situation. The car drives fine so it's not a majorly important issue but I was wondering if anyone has any idea where I should possibly start? should the dash light up even though the pump is gone? Also i think I read about some companies that deal with this sort of thing, can anyone point me in the right direction? I live near Cambridge

I would have thought all three ACD lights should be on in this case, it might be a case that the bulb/s have been removed from behind the dash. Have you got any means to check fault codes?
Is there nothing at all left of the AYC/ACD system, assuming the ACD is still in place is there piping going into it?
Finally did the guy give you an explination on why he changed the diff?

The guy said the owner before him done it because the mechanical ones are less problematic, but I've literally just got off the phone with the mapper who's got my car at the moment and he's said it looks like the diff has never been removed, meaning the old pump probably failed and he just removed it and blocked it off. In some ways that's a good thing because now it just means I need a new pump rather than pump and internals. I've heard about people removing the lightbulb from the dash, I might try and stick another back in and see what it's saying

Has the Rear diff got bleed nipples? If so it's certainly the original. is the wireing loom still there? AYC pumps are expensive unfortunalty!

I haven't got the car so can't check but I'm pretty confident it's standard. If I remember rightly there are 2 hoses and a connector on one side under the car. Yeah, I've looked into getting a pump and they certainly aren't cheap, and that plus the fact I've just been told 2 cylinders are leaking far too much and I'm looking at 1600 to do an inspection and partial standard rebuild plus fitting my cams and then mapping, or 2500 for upgraded rods, gaskets and head studs as well, I think little Claire and tommy are going to have a crappy Christmas this year.... Ok that part was a joke, i don't have any kids but I'm gonna be skint is what I'm saying lol

I ordered a new ayc pump so hopefully that will sort it all out, and 700 quid was less than I thought it would be although I'm going to get it rebuilt so I know where I stand with it

Even with a mechanical rear diff you still need the pump to run the ACD (the centre diff). The guy is full of crap, probably just removed the pump as it had failed. Strange thing to do, though, but he's probably just had bulbs out too as a AYC to mechanical diff will put the warning light up unless you do something about it.

This is the thing...people sometimes go on about ayc saying it drives no different etc etc, but someone who can't afford £250-£500 to fix a pump on their car sure isn't going to fix anything else that is mechanically wrong with it. Badly maintained cars are normally best avoided for these very reasons. Of course hindsight is always 20-20, you weren't really to know these things about the car.

Yeah, as I said, I was probably in a bit over my head when I bought it. Trusting other peoples good will is probably not the right way to go about buying used cars, I should just consider myself lucky I have a good enough job to be able to afford to fix the issues rather than being some unlucky bastard who maxed out his credit cards to get the car in the first place... Live and learn, she'll soon be spot on again, better than ever in fact

Plus I do like making a car my own, buying something standard (or sub standard in this case) and making it much better. My old Leon cupra r was totally standard, in fact it had far too small discs when I bought it, but when I sold it it was a respectable 280bhp and sounded awesome. Buying a fast car is easy, making your own takes a bit more time and thought

I agree, although all I seem to have done is fix mine though rather than making it my own! good luck with the repair work!
