Alright lads, new member here :/

I've got an MR FQ320 2005 model.

The radiator fan came on sporadically and now when I insert the ignition key and turn it until the dash lights are illuminated the fan runs on it's own :( I'm guessing a borked fan module but not too sure. Another thing is the AYC lights (all 3 are on constant now) and as it appears to be a major problem I guess it is a strip down and repair if possible or a reconditioned unit. The main problem I have is the engine, it turns over but doesn't fire, I'm pretty new to all this techo-madness and have no idea as to how to check the crankshaft sensor or camshaft sensor, I have replaced the coil packs, leads and plugs just in case but still no joy. I've tested the IAV and it does what it is supposed to when the key is turned. The car suddenly stopped one evening as I was driving home from work and I got it towed home, it would idle but very roughly, some black smoke from the exhaust (not heavy, just slight) and then it would cut out, after further inspection I noticed a boost pipe had come off (below the turbo unit) my first thought was 'blockage, it's got to be a damn blockage!' lol - so I popped it back on and tightened the jubilees using a small wrench, they won't come off again! Since I did this the car refuses to fire now, I can smell fuel so I guess the pumps working?

I have evoscan on my laptop and using a tactrix cable hooked it up; it connected and surprise surprise NO fault codes lol!!!!!!!!!!!! I thought these modern electronic marvels told you if something was wrong? Guess not :/
All it gave me were a few readings as I turned the engine over on the starter, crank sensor = 0 - again I have no idea if this is good or bad? I had an Evo 4 many years ago and it decided that it had had enough one fine evening, when we were out visiting the Derbyshire countryside - balance belt snapped, took out the timing belt with it so that it smashed all the valves and damaged the pistons too, even a camshaft was bent :/ You would have thought that they could have designed something to instantly bleed down the adjusters to stop valve - piston contact but oh noo, not mitsi, they would sooner see a 20+ grand car destroy itself, bloody marvellous!

Sorry for the rather long post but as you might have guessed by now I am pretty miffed and about had it with these cars, I think I will design a flintstone car and start working on my leg strength :)

Have you checked the timing belt hasnt jumped?? Check your timing marks to be sure but id have thought it would have put a code up (no syncro between cam and crank) did it cut out while driving?

Thnx Andyw08, I've spun the crank and the timing marks line up spot on, well as near as damn it :$ It did cut out whilst driving yes, I was about to overtake a slow mpv when it just went, no power, nothing, it hunted a little on tickover and then stopped. I've managed to start it twice but the idle was rough and I mean rough, as though it is getting fuel but no air, if that makes any sense? I'm not to well versed with these newer type motors as I come from an era when cars were much much simpler :) (showing my age) here's a thing; I have just connected the tactrix cable and ran evoscan, then started a data-log - it looked as though every module/sensor was doing its job and then after a couple of seconds all but 4 were no longer running? The data was logging fine, crank sensor was reading 0 1 0 1 0 1 and then it hit 0 and stayed there...I did a DTC check and only one came up; P1603 ? My search thus far has led me to thinking that this is a communication error somewhere, I really hope that the ECM under the bonnet isn't borked :(

Mmm intresting this one as a few of your symptoms are the same that i had with one of the evo 4's. after getting home from taking the other half shopping one weekend i pulled up out side the house and as ive always done with turbo cars left her to tick over for a few mins to cool down, any ways i noticed the sound of the rad fan at full speed cracked the bonnet open and to only find that the rad fan was on full speed and so was the A/C fan now the traffic was bad so i put it down to maybe the car running hot due to sitting in traffic all the way home so left it at that come out the nxt morning to turn the key like u and to find that the rad fan and a/c fan kicked in even b for i cranked the engine "mmm ok" any ways after many many times trying to get it started i drained the battery so got that on charge, whilst that was charging i had a few spares bits like your self and changed exactly what u had changed check the cam belt balance belt all fine stuck the battery bk on nope cranking fine spark was there fuel was there... after hours and hours finaly got it towed to cpp sandbach they kept it for a few days and then they rang me and it turned out to be the ecu had fried it selfs  even gaz at cpp said out of all the years he had been working on evo's hes only probably seen a few ecu's do this so maybe worth checking the ECU bud? not saying it is going to be that but worth a check as like i say i had the same problems as u have stated

Yeah somtimes you've just got to bite the bullet and sent it to a specialist.....you might find the problem yourself in a week or two or not ha ha they work on them day in and day out so know more than us. And if your close to sandbatch id recomend cpp iv used them before...nice bunch ;) where are you from?

I'm from Rotherham south yorkshire. Thing is, it appears to me that cars today are designed to be taken back to the dealers or specialist shops who deal with electronics, gone are the days where you could stick in a condensor or points and voila! It does seem a step backwards for average, hard working folk doesn't it? What I mean is that instead of being able to fix them yourself it now costs £100's if not £1000's to have them put right, I guess the question is "What limit do you set when buying any new car these days"?

Damn!! That looks nasty bud :/ I do hope that mine isn't fried, I know it sounds a little daft but I bought the car because I always wanted a sierra cosworth 500 and could never afford one, then along comes these power houses and I thought sod it, I'm having one...I must admit that it has lived up to my expectations (until now) more so in fact, the sheer exhilaration from surge after surge of endless power, makes the skin tingle :)
I will have a look at the ECU tomorrow and hope it's ok. A silly question "where is it located"? I took out the glove box and all I see are plastic pipes and a few wires.

i no were you are coming from m8 lol this is my 3rd evo ive had my self and even tho ive had problems with them ive always been drawn back to them due to that grin factor :) just had a route around on google for u m8 as i no its not in the same place as the evo 4 like mine and people r saying its deffo behind the glove box "It is behind the glove box. I assume you are dropping the glove box down and out. Look at the top of the area. It is held in by four silver philips head screws" <... thats from one of the posts i found buddy hope that helps

Thank you, I have to say that the Evo is without doubt a technical marvel, but I remember an age old saying "Keep it simple", these days the word simple doesn't compute with the young, they seem programmed I dunno. A friend of mine had an Evo 4 back in the day and his balance belt snapped, went into the timing belt and totalled his engine, suffice it to say that he scrapped the car and never bought another. I wonder if it is the ECU, how much could I get one for? I mean they aren't like a track rod end or a ball joint are they? lol. Would it need to be re-mapped or something? I'm lost with this stuff to be honest, I even bought an Autel P100 multi-tester in order to go fault finding :) I've watched a few videos on Youtube on how to use it and what to test for. I'm sorry for your ECU mate, what did you do once you knew it had blown?

ahhh no worries on that ecu m8 lol that car is gone now some one pulled out of a side street on me and it was either hit them or hit traffic on the other side of the road head on so ya lol..... the ecu is a straight swap, pull old one out put new one in fire her up sorted "Plug and play" as long as the ecu u have put in aint been mapped or anything u r good togo u can pick ecu's up for £80 to £120 think i paid £90 for mine. just make sure u get a ecu from a e7 e8 e9 cause the e4 e5 e6 ecu's are 4 pin connectors and the l8r ecu's like the one in yours are 3 pin connectors :) do u no any one that owns a l8r evo maybe they could lend ya there ecu for 2 mins whilst u tried it?

just another quick one just read your 2nd post and saw that P1603 fault code so had a route around and found "P1603 Battery Backup Circuit Malfunction (Mitsubishi)"
"TROUBLESHOOTING HINTS (The most likely causes for this code to be set are: )
- Open or shorted battery backup line, or loose connector.
- PCM failed."

from what ive googled PCM means ecu

i no it may sound stupid but b for this happened to the car did u do any work? have u checked the battery terminals are fully connected and tight? and maybe its worth a try do a ecu reset?

disconnect the battery for 10 mins
reconnect battery start the car
leave ticking over for 5 to 10 mins <... if the car starts
turn everything on in the car heaters lights radio ect leave ticking over for 5 to 10 mins <...if the car starts

simple thing todo worth a try i guess :) sry for throwing all this at ya just trying to help with a few idea's id try my self if i was u m8

Got ya on the ECU's :) I suppose its not too bad if it is the ECU. The battery was off most of yesterday whilst I poked and prodded around looking for loose connections, breaks etc. It must have been off for at least 6 hours :/ Anyhoo, once I put the bat on and tried to turn it over I got the fan running first before it cranked, it is a puzzler I'll give it that. Are there any fuses inside the car apart from those under the bonnet? Most fuse boxes used to be IN the car for a reason back in the day, it kept them nice and snug and dry :) Still learning...I also found this battery backup malfunction late last night but nothing about it, seems to be an isolated problem. I'm going to remove the ECU now and have a look at it, fingers crossed it's in good shape, if not = more £'ssss :/

Found the ECU...under the passenger foot-well carpet!!? Wasn't fixed where it should have been; anyhoo, opened up the case and.........everything seems ok :) No burn or scorch marks, no broken areas on the board, so I think it is good. I will post a pic later on. Couldn't believe that it would be under the damn carpet, all those things that people just throw into the foot-well - like work boots lol...I'm amazed it is still in one piece. What size battery should this car have, any ideas? The old one was a 35Ah 280 cranking amps and the new one is 60Ah and 500 cold cranking amps, could this be too much for it ya think?

Looks OK to me :) there are some wires that have been spliced into two of the three connector blocks that fasten into the ECU, I am guessing that they are from the Cobra alarm that was fitted at some point in it's life...
