Evo 8 carbon spoiler damage

hey guys, I have a yellow Evo 8 fq300, it has a carbon spoiler with yellow sides. on the top of it there is like a thin quote of lacquer or some kind of film to protect the carbon however this has started to flake away (only on the top). I took it to a local panel beaters and sprayers but he said he could not repair it because he would need to get the flakey bits off and he thinks he would just scratch all the carbon. does anyone have any idea how to solve the problem.

Can you take some pictures for me?

you can sand it down, just be carefull not to sand too hard or you will sand through the layers making a funny pattern in the weave,

it doesnt matter if you rough up the carbon slighty underneath the laqquer as it will go shiny again when relaqquered

anyway if you can get me a pic i can probably advise better

oooh thats nasty looking, does the laquer come off if you pick at it ?


do you know what caused? Uv exposure etc? how long has it been like that

Yes. If I pick at the edges of the damaged area then it will flake off. I think it is uv exposure as it is only the top part of the carbon that is like this. The under side is brand new. It has been like this for the past year and just been getting worse.

its repairable i was just asking the questions to make sure it doesnt reoccur, where are you in the world?

also is the spoiler an aftermarket item? (sorry i dont know much about what evo's came with from the factory)

I am in the uk. I am not sure if this came from the manufacturer as I am the third owner but I think it did.
I am wanting to repare this myself but if you think it needs to go in to a paint shop to get done then I might just do that.
I am not looking for it to look brand new, just something other than looking as bad as it is.

my first thought is to carefully try a little acetone on the laqquer, if its as crappy as it looks to be it might actually just rub off


failing that very carefully wet and dry it off

no worries, if you need any advise give me a shout

once you have the surface back to carbon and preped a decent laquer should bring it up nicely

ideally you will want a very high quality UV protective (as composites are very vunerable to UV damage) laquer

probably a 2 pack laquer

cheapest way i thort of was to just by some carbon fibre vynil with the same type of weave and get it wrapped around the wing?????

that can be the back up plan if i make a mess of it lol
