Evo 7 Airtrek issues

I have quite a rare car here in the UK. Its a Mitsubishi Airtrek Turbo. Its pretty much a Mitsubishi evo 7 with a semi-automatic gearbox (Evo gta) with a different body on it (kind of like an outlander).

Im having a few problems and im really struggling to find any info to help me.

Firstly im having a problem with my car stalling when first starting it. I have to hold the accelerator slightly for about 20 seconds or it will stall. Afterwards it has a very low idle until warm . After the car has been driven and is warm it has a high idle (around 1500-200rpm) if i put my foot under the accelerator and pull it back towards me it lowers the idle again (too low).

Secondly if i hold the revs at 4000rpm under a light throttle i can hear a slight engine rattle, Its been like this since i have owned it and only happens at very slight throttle at this rpm any lower or higher and it goes away, also it doesnt happen with more throttle. Is this a common problem?

I know i also have a boost leak at the moment. I have ordered a replacement original BOV as the current one is leaking above 5000rpm so i dont know if that is contributing to the problems.

Lastly does any one know if the front brake calipers are the same as an evo.

Sorry forgot to add no matter how cold it is outside my cooling fan is on as soon as i start my car and it changes speed every few seconds

Hi I'm from the UK but now live in NZ where these cars are a little more common. I own a 2003 airtrek turbo Ralliart edition.

Firstly your initial issue with the idle sounds like it could be the idle control valve otherwise know as the stepper motor or ISCV , if you have the car in N and turn the steering side to side does the revs raise a little? If not then it is almost certainly the ISCV, they are well known to fail at around 100,000kms or about 60000miles. Mine is currently buggered and whenever I take my foot of the throttle it will stall until the engine is warmed up. There is a test you can do with a multimeter if you Google it I'm sure you will find a video.

Before you do anything to this though try and get your BOV fixed as boost leaks can cause weird probelms, not sure if you can change your order now but an EVO IX BOV is a direct replacement fit but metal rather than plastic so better quality and can hold higher boost if you want to mod the car later on.

Another common fault on these cars is the Fan speed controller (boxy looking thing a the back of your radiator),this would cause the freaky fan speed issue you are describing.

The front calipers are not the same as an EVO six or up as they are not brembos, think they may be from an earlier evo but not 100% sure on that one.

Cheers for the reply. Im a member of MAC but they arnt as clued up as you guys.

I did check the stepper motor and it was working but i suspect that the seal is not working correctly as my revs do not raise when i turn the wheel.

I did replace my bov with a standard evo 8 replacement but the leak is still somewhere. I will be doiing a boost leak test soon with my tester as soon as i get time.

If i get the brake caliper part numbers it only seems to say they fit the airtrek and they dont cross reference to another vehicle.

Ill start with the boost leak and move onwards. What psi boost should the standard car produce?

Stock boost is around 11-12 psi.
I replaced my stepper today and it's back to normal.
I get an engine rattle from the intercooler bracket, took me a while to figure out that the rear bolts were loose and made a hell of a noise. Probably worth checking?

Sorry its been so long since my last reply. I have a stupid amount of projects and cars which i have finally got on top of so i can concentrate on the airtrek once again.

I found a couple of boost leaks which have been sorted apart from a tiny one where the throttle flap bar passes through the throttle body. I have brought the seals and will sort it soon, it certaiunly wont be causing the issues im having.

After fixing the boost leak it ran much better but was still down on power and you could feel it holding back at different revs. I brought an evo 7 maf which i changed and it made the car a million times worse, so i changed it back

Does anyone know of anything that could be causing this problem or know whether i may find someone bar mitsubishi who could fully code read the car in Hertfordshire with genuine Mitsubishi diagnostics

Look into getting a tactrix openport which will give you the ability to pull engine fault codes and also run a whole load of logging of data about what's going on in the engine. I had a faulty fuel pump in mine which led to it hesitating or missing a beat randomly for a while. It's a bit hard to say what it could be though, can you hook a boost guage up and see whether it dropping boost at any point?

Just thought I would let you know that I fixed all the problems

A mixture of weak fuel pump (now replaced by walbro 225)

And new plugs were set to .035 when they should have been .025

Also the farting noise I was hearing over 4000rpm was because I am missing a clip on my air box and it was air being forced under the lid

Its actually the longest I have owned a car and I was considering putting it in a garage for a few years. Especially the way older unusual jap cars are going it will probably be worth a small fortune in 10 years. But I have much to much to get on with and no space so have decided to sell it. :cry:

I managed to enter back into Airtrek ownership by buying this one off eBay. Just replaced the ICV (stepper motor). All running and idling fine now. I sold my old one back in 2007 and regretted it ever since!

Hi I've just bought an Airtrek And I'm trying to convert from km to mph , I've got the part from svaspeedos.co.uk to fit but can't work it out, has anyone fitted one ? Could really do with some help. Thanks
