Evo 5-spd Gearbox

I'm thinking the worse

Keep finding it difficult to change from 1st to 2nd, quite a struggle to get in.

Also on more spirited drives 4th to 5th at high revs is a grind!

Do I have to concede the box is knackered or anything else I can do?

Car has done 28K miles.

My limited knowledge suggests that the synchros have rounded off and that means its had it?

Anyone know anywhere selling refurbished evo IX 5-spd boxes? I'd be reluctant to pick one up from a breakers without knowing it was all working well.

Any gearbox oil that could help or other thngs it could be? Linkages?

First thing to check is linkages but with the grinding syncros seem more likely. They are easy enough to have changed the only problem is getting the box out I hear its a bit of an effort and quite involved. If you are good with ya hands and have a willing mate get it out yourself and take it somewhere to be refurbished

I think for me this is where the cost will come in, will probably need to get a garage to do the owrk for me.

Are the EVO gearboxes weak? I would have thought they would make them quite robust given they know the potential of the engines and the likely abuse they will get.

I'm not mechanically minded, I'll ask my garage to check the linkages and maybe throw in some new box oil but think i'll be looking for a refurb.

Another job to add to the list of thinks not right on my car! arghh

I hear people say the 5 speed is tougher than the 6 but I not had any probs with mine and its covered just over 50k. See what cash jobs people can do. I paid 550k to have my syncros replaced in my type r box as a 'private job' get some quotes buddy the labour is the more expensive part

Yep labour is te bit that concerns me!!

I was told 5spd stronger than the 6-spd and not to change for a 6-spd.

Basically I think its shot because of the way the previous owner drove it! Sure they are meant to be driven but I think some people think the hard they smash the gears in the quicker they go. You can still change quick without bashing the granny out of the gearbox!! lol

I'll see what my local garage says

Yh a lot of people don't know how to drive lazy clutch action or to eager to get off the clutch and there goes syncros

adjust the clutch first before blaming the box

Its running about 390 (when setup properly) at 1.5bar

I'll get the garage to check the clutch too.

Only had the car about 5-6 weeks and don't know if it has an aftermarket clutch or not. (Don't s'pose there is an easy way to check)?
