Money is a little tight but want to be running around 390-400 bhp. Engine has 77 kms on it and no smoke or knocks and was started from cold. Any help appreciated

If you can afford to change them then do so, wouldn't want to do all the work for them to go in the near future. No harm in changing them really

Sorry if I am reading this wrong

But are you asking about changing the rods aswell?

I would personally look at running a slightly safer power, people are running those figures on 5 engines, with no problems, however, others are or were seeing major issues, or at least they were when I was thinking of increasing the power in my 5 lump.

Hopefully someone will come along with a more informative answer/reply.

I think 360bhp is quite adequate and safe to be honest, just my opinion though.

hi matt thanks for the reply the guy who had it was running 370 in her that was with 272 cams and usual mods air filter exhaust etc,so what do you reckon put a head gasket and belt on it new cams as he sold the 272 and run it at 370? what issues do people get when running bigger bhp on the 5's???cheers dave

Hi Dave, if you have the usual stage 1 mods, fuel pump, remap, exhaust induction kit you should be able to hit 370bhp without the need for cams, when I bought mine it came with the dyno sheet showing 380bhp with the above mods (no uprated cams) and this was at a 1.6 bar boost. Having had it dyno'd since (new engine in),it is now running 355(ish) at 1.4 bar.

One of the major issues I heard about was the rods letting go, this would be dependant on the type of use and boost you are going to be running, aswell as mileage, past use etc etc.

Like I say mine is running roughly 355bhp and is quick enough on the roads.
If you were planning on changing cams, maybe look at some from an 8MR, they are mean't to be a nice, cheap upgrade to those on the 5's.

I would do what you can with the engine, most certainly a timing belt, having had mine snap on the 5 engine, its pretty painful lol, head gasket aswell, again one from an 8MR would be more than enough (I am sure they fit, best check though) and new oil of course, just replace what you can afford really, better to do it now than something going wrong......this is just what I would do, I am sure others will have different opinions.

Cheers for the info Matt have all stage one parts,I'm now thinking just top end overhaul and cams as mainly using for trackdays so don't want massive Bhp just enough to piss off the ferraris lol would you reccomend replacing the rod bolts with arp ones or just leave bottom end alone

i might be wrong but i dont think it is necessary. the rods usually give up way before the bolts do.

I would agree with Youngy here, I can't imagine a need for the bolts unless you were running higher power, not sure at what power level they would be recommended though. Like he says, I think the actual rods would give up first.

I think if you went with cams then got a remap, with the existing mods, you would be happy. What power was your IV running by the way?

Just out of curiosity, what clutch do you have in at the moment?

One thing I would add though, choose who you would want to map your car and do a little research on them. A good mapper is going to be one of, if not, the most important aspect of the work you are going to be doing....

Oh, post some pics up of the progress, I'm quite interested :)

Cheers

I agree with matt. 380bhp is a big no no !
1:60 bar will give you around 350-360 mark yes and I also would stick to the standard cams cis they will be fine at that power level.
You don't want your engine to give birth to a conrod now do you :)

I've heard of rods exiting on 350bhp 5 engines but it's luck of the draw at that level me thinks.

I'd do cambelt and balance shaft belt. Also I'd be changing the clutch while the engine is out cos you wouldn't want to fit the engine then take it straight back out again to do the clutch now would you :)
