Hello again buddy!! have put car in garage re. faulty speedo; know the problem lies with the nylon cog in gearbox but it is proving extremely tough to remove because of damage to cog , dont know about forcing it too much incase it breaks up and drops inside the box!!! Do you have any experience with such a problem? or any suggestions ?? Dont want to cause a bigger problem if ya know what i mean!!

Hi Roberto,

What you want to do if it is stuck and you are worried about it dropping into the gear box is the following:

Calm down, have a cup of tea and then go back to the car, take off the ten mil nut and pull the sender from as close to the box as possible with a quality pair of pliers or a quality mould grip in a direct vertical angle and it will come out with no problems.

In all the years of changing boxes and clutches and transfer boxes on evo's I have only ever come across a hand full of stubborn senders.

If you are worried about it dropping in the box I truly don't know how that can occur.

If you still are pessimistic then I suggest it is best that you take out the speedo clock and get a volt meter to see if the sender is sending.

You will need a ramp to carry this out or a 2 tonne trolley jack, four axle stands and a prayer!!!!

Let me know how you get on, if you get stuck then get back to me right here mate.

We had an evo 6 in a couple of weeks back with the same problem. If you have traced the current back to the speedo and all is fine then what you need to do is check the de-limiter/converter unit that i suspect is connected either just after the speedo sender or under the dash or behind the speedo cluster.

Even if a current can be traced back from the sender to the speedo that does not mean anything significant. The converter is what counts. By pass the converter by joining the original wires back together (bridge over the unit) and see if it makes a difference. You could have a faulty solder connection on the speedo cluster too.

Is the car running MPH or KPH???

If it's running KPH still, then the other alternative is to look in today's posts, evo alex is selling bits from one of his evo 4's, i suggest that you do a deal for the speedo as the sender is new, either way he is breaking one and will be able to give you good info.

Keep me posted buddy, sounds like a long thing i know but we can get there in the end!!!!.
