Evo 4 - Front Wiper Won't Switch Off!!

Ok as I mentioned in my newbie topic, i've got an evo 4. Anyways, whenever I pull the wiper stalk towards me, the front washers will not spray..however the wipers will turn on but will NOT turn of.

Funny thing is, when I try to wash my rear window, the front nozzles start to spray!

So it seems like some tubes have been switched from front to back or something? However, it doesn't really explain to my why my wipers keep working and refuse to switch off.

Is it possible that the wipers will not switch off due to a malfunctioning washer pump??

Any thoughts are welcome!

Check the wiper stalk as I suspect there is a problem there and would not rule out a short in the current.

It does not sound like it has anything to do with the motors.

When the cars go into Auction in Japan, they have to pass strict Government guidelines to receive JUMVEA Certification.

In order to get the pass, the Auctioneers have many Technicians working for them. I suspect that the Wiper issue was noticed and the Technician that was tasked with repairing it did a half ass job as they are under heavy pressure and need to work fast!!!

When the car is up for Auction, all Technicians have to log exactly what faults they have noticed and what they have done to rectify them in order to pass the car.

From time to time I do log in to have a read as sometimes it is well entertaining to say the least, you find out which cars are mingers and how they were botched to get them exported.

The Technicians are blatant in the language that they use and have a laugh and a joke about it too!!!!

Logs like:

"This piece of crap Pulsar GTiR has a blown engine so I have removed all running gear (gear/transfer box, drive shafts, prop shaft and rear dif) and fitted a 1.4 DE engine, box and shafts to pass........."

"They call this an ebolution??? My Daihatsu Copen is faster in reverse! clutch is dead so it will have to have a rolling start when brought in, good it is going"

"This Skyline is no king, it is a donkey dressed to look like a horse.................."

Haha wow, ok I did NOT know that! Anyways what's there to check on the wiper stalk?? I'm kinda handy but electronics is not my specialty unfortunately. Isn't it easier to just replace it?

I think it will be easier if you were to replace it.

Who knows what has been done to it to make it function.

Haha I just pm'ed you El. So I'm gonna try to crack it open and see what's going on this weekend, if it doesn't help I'll replace it.

I would not be surprised if you find that some one has already had a go on it before.

Clean all the contacts and see how you get on with it.

Haha well find out tomorrow. Btw has anyone got anytips on opening up the cover and removing the wiper stalk??

Do I have to remove the steering wheel, or isn't that necessary? Tips could prevent me from messing around for awhile I think

You do not have to take the steering wheel off.

If you look under the steering wheel, you will notice that there are 2 covers which need to be removed.

One is the cover/surround which is directly below the steering wheel, this is the one that the ignition barrel and the indicator & Wiper Stalks are encased in. It is known as the IGNITION COWLING.

The other cover is below the Ignition Cowling and just above the pedals. It is affixed to the bottom half of the Dash Board.

All you will need is a possidrive/Phillips Screw Driver.

Look below the steering wheel and you will notice that the cowling has around 4 screws which need to be removed.

The lower cover has 4 screws too.

Remove all of the screws in any order that you like.

Once the screws are removed on the lower cover, it will drop to the floor.

Once the screws that are holding the Ignition Cowling are removed, you will need to separate the two sections carefully to avoid damaging the fixing clips.

The Wiper stalk has 2 screws holding it in place and one connector block.

To complete this task should take you no longer than 5 minutes.
