wondering if anyone here can help, i have a 1997 evo 4 on 85k, its had Evo 6 ecu, Evo 6 Injectors, Walbro 255lph fuel pump fitted. the problem is the engine gets really really hot :hm: the engine temperature gauge doesn't say the engine is hot, but there is a heat wave above the bonnet when driving and a slight burning smell.

i have checked the oil and its got plenty in.

associated problems...

1) mot says an oil leak, but doesnt say where

2) the dipstick pops out, when i bought it, it was cable tied down. reading up on the problem it seems to be associated with "high crank pressure" / "crankcase pressure", (piston problem?). one solution suggested was to replace the temp sensor so the fan kicked in earlier??

3) stutters at high revs, feels like fuel isnt flowing to the engine properly. but ive read that if the engine is hot the "torque limiter" kicks in??

also the car has had bonnet lifters fitted, have they done that because the engine does get hot??

any idea what the problem could be, and possible solution? also i know its been driven for some time like this, is it safe to keep driving it?

thanks in advance for any help, really worried about damaging the engine

The heat that comes off the turbo is more than enough to make heat waves even in a summers day. Chance are its ok..

thanks very much for the replys simon and dirtmatt, put my mind at rest a bit, does heat up very quickly though, i'd say 10 mins and heat waves will be coming out of the engine vents. but sounds like its normal :) not sure about the smell, is that also common? the mot does say oil leak so im thinking the engine is burning it off somewhere. will also have a see about the o rings and plugs :)

what about the stuttering at high revs, is that the torque limiter? or does the fueling / turbo need looking at?

If the mot says oil leak, then it could be dripping on your down pipe, that would give you the smell of burning oil mate, get it on some ramps on tick over and have a look buddy :)

The stutter, without hearing it, could be high rpm missfire, boost control any thing really, why not bring it over as I'm doing free map checks for February ;-)
