evo 4 belt went slack help please

hi every one i have just bought a evo 4 last week and its been great up until last night

was driving home from work when i started getting this horible rattling noise
so i just parked it up and went out this morning to investagate to find my timing belt with extreem play in it how could this be
what would cause this
and is it an easy fix

I would guess one of the other items on the belt have moved. You need to find what has moved and why. And dont drive it any more until fixed. You will also need to check you havent jumped a few teeth on the pullys.

Id get it done by a pro.

i agree,

check the tensioners to make sure they havent moved, the danger is that you have jumped teeth on the cam pulleys and the timing could be out on the car. this could result in pistons hitting valves or the car running either advanced or retarded timing which will hinder performance.

you wont know if it has jumpted teeth without having the timing checked by someone who knows.

how much play is in the belt? can you lift the belt and move it on to another tooth?

my guess is the tensioner below the cam pulley has either broken or is slack and has moved therefore reducing tension on the belt,
