evo 4, 5th gear crunch noise on engaging.

hi all!
new on here, so had a trawl through older posts, seems it's not uncommon to have synchro probs in the evo 4 box. mine is crunching going into 5th. previous owner told me it used to crunch into 3rd, but he changed the oil and this cured 3rd, but moved the problem to 5th, hmm,
anyway, guess it's box out time, so, whats the best option, recon box, or source new synchros? and rough idea of costs, and any sources for either? also any mitsubishi special tools required for a box rebuild? cheers for any help.

just have a look at the gear linkage on top of the gearbox first, these are kinda like bonded together with a rubber and it can come apart making gears crunch or very hard to select... easy fix just take them off and weld them up.....

if your synchros are worn then its probably cheaper just to get another second hand box.

the baulk rings are cheap enough, but the labour costs will be quite high.

hi check the linkage as above and also the bubber bushes at the ends can be replaced with a small bearings in stead of a rubber bushes. google it :O)

i can also highly recommend replacing the e4 box with a evo 7 5sp box will cost a little more but you get a stronger box . shorter 1st and longer 5th gear and if you use the e7 fly wheel and bigger clutch you can run more power to . :O)

i have the same problem mate how do you know if your getting a good secondhand box?

cheers for the info guys, few things to check before i rip the box out. i'm an ex car mechanic, so labour costs not so much a problem. gonna try some molyslip in the box to see if i can put off stripping it for a bit.

ah well, fitted bearings to the linkage, better change now, but still crunches. got a quote for rebuilding my box 450 plus vat, so prolly go down that route now. on a brighter note, got the lowered springs thrown off an standereds back on, an a nice 3 inch turbo back exhaust fitted, nice!
