The other day I started getting a sort of rattle/tap noise on my Evo 4, had it checked out by a few people and they all seem to say it's a small end bearing gone and also they said it looks like I'm starting to get crankwalk, just got the engine out tonight, first time iv done this on en evo. Anyways, to sort the crank walk is it just a case of changing the crank, iv got the chance for an Evo 7 crank, will this sort the issue?
Any tips are very welcome. Cheers

Well i was thinking about getting an 8 engine but I'm abit rushed for time for where I'm doing the car, would an 8 be a direct replacement or is there anything I need to move/change?

You will have all the bits you need to do it there a strait forward swap apart from swapping some bits over. If my IV engines goes i will not be wasting any money on it i would go newer

You are not starting to get crankwalk, you already have crankwalk at a serious degree. You cannot fix what has to do with construction of the specific block. Do not bother with the IV engine,as they are too prone to crankwalk.

To explain further, the IV block is machined for a different centre thrust bearing and this is what causes crankwalk on the IV engines.

To cure this , mitsi machined a new block from the evo 5 and onwards which is using a thrust washer.

My advice is to get a low mileage evo 8mr engine.

You have two options,

a. You get an 8mr engine with all its ancillaries including its ecu.

b. You get an evo 7 bare engine, you use just the block, crank, rods, pistons, with new bearings, rings etc with the head, cams, injectors, turbo from your evo 4 engine.

I would go with the first option, a bit more expensive, but you will have a totally different car, with more power and torque and an ecu that can be remapped to 400/400, which is something that the 8mr engine is very capable of and reliable on these figures.

Even if you used the 8's inlet mani and or throttle body or even injectors you would still be ok as you have an evo 5 ecu which you can scale in the injectors using ecuflash and tactrix cable.
