E4-6 GSR Gearbox

I removed a 4.11 final drive and pinion wheel from my E5 GSR Gearbox and fitted standard final drive and pinion. The car will not select a gear when started and only takes the gears when not started and stationary. The clutch is an Exedy Twin Plate Clutch which is like new and was working fine with the 4.11 final drive fitted. It has been bleed, linkage adjusted and still wont except any gears when the car is started or when the clutch is pressed. Does anyone know why and how to correct this? Gearbox has been split and checked by Transmission Specialist who states all is how it should be.

I had this issue. Turned out to be clutch drag as there was so much dust from the friction plates trapped in the twin plate assembly.
Cleaned and fitted new plates, job done :)

Only thing is mate the exedy twin plate clutch has only been fitted 400 miles ago and was sent to c&g clutch specialists and came back fully checked and cleaned then fitted on Monday this week with the gearbox and still remains the same. Has been removed yet again now and gearbox sent away again to Transmission specialist for yet another strip down and check who say it is fine and the clutch again cleaned and fitted the other day and still can not get a gear with the clutch engaged but can get all the gears when car is not started.... really doing my head in as was fine with the 4.11 fianl drive and pinion and this has only happened after fitting standard gsr final drive and pinion. Clutch has still 90% remaining on the plates. Been over a week now and evo still on the lift :wtf::(:(

and the clutch pedal adjustment? sounds like its not separating

- clutch pedal ajustment

-master cylinder bleed/leaking as it deid trying to push the twin plate

-slave cylinder - see above.

master cylinder has been checked incase any air getting in, had been bleed quite a few times and the pedal has been adjusted to try and compensate but still does not take a gear when clutch is engaged only when the car is switched off and the clutch not pressed. That is why i thought it was a clutch issue even thought the clutch was not fitted that long ago so was taken to c&g clutch specialists who cleaned and checked it saying it was fine with still a good 90% remaining on the clutch plates. I have even taken the master cylinder from my E6 and fitted it to my E5 in question and still the same result :(

I would try vacuum bleeding it. Get a jam jar with a metal lid and a good length of vacuum hose and make 2 holes in the jam jar lid so the vac pipe will push in and be a tight fit. Now you want a long piece of hose that will reach to the bleed nipple and another piece that you will connect into a vacuum line on the engine but make sure that pipe only just pokes through the lid. Now start engine and open bleed nipple the vacuum from the engine will bleed the system when you open the bleed nipple.

Now to check your master cylinder you need to clamp the flexi of going to the slave cylinder if your pedal then goes to floor it shows the master has had it.

I'm convinced though a vacuum bleed will sort it.

Hope that helps.

This has not worked mate and ive borrowed a master cylinder from an E9 and tried this also but is still the same, this has only happened when the 4.11 final drive was changed to a gsr standard final drive again. I am convinced it has to be in the gearbox and they have missed a shim or something as worked 100% before until the standard final drive and pinion was fitted by Transmission Specialist. I have always said your better off doing it yourself and if you cant do it then dont own it!

If you are getting the gears with the engine off that would not be the box. As you are not getting them with the engine running the clutch is not dis engaging properly so is a clearance issue.

This may sound stupid but are you sure the friction plates are in the correct way round as I have seen that done before and that would not allow the clutch to clear may sound stupid but that is a common mistake.

But this worked fine until the 4.11 final drive was changed to standard final drive, cant work 100% and change a final drive in the morning and fit after lunchtime and not work. Yea the friction plates are the right way round and i have seen this done before also by other people and even mixing up the gear linkage which i found unreal how someone could do that. This really has me stuck as again today have tried many things and getting tired fitting the box to remove it yet again.
