Drive shaft removal and outer cv

Hi all

I finally got a replacement drive shaft due to worn threads on my off side outer cv joint. The replacement isn't was advertised and infact a near side shaft. Tempted to cut my losses and swap over the over cv. Would need to pop the shaft off regardless so bit of extra work but saves refunds and sending back etc.

So few questions, know your meant to tap off or leaver out the drive shaft but there isn't much room off side with the exhaust. Any tips. Going to be doing it off the floor so lacking space. Can't see it being lossless to get a block on wood in to hammer it off?

Also, never had good experience with knocking cv joints off. Gristly block of wood and hammer. And hope it pulls it off with the bearings all still in place lol.

Any advice is much appreciated as know its going to not go to plan lol.

just a idea

if you cant get the inner cv out the box then cut the tie that holds the rubber boot on and pull the shaft and inner part of the joint leaving the outer part of the inner cv in the box .

the best way i found of getting the outer cv of is take the shaft and outer joint and find a bench mounted vice . open the vice so the shaft can be pulled down through it with ease to stop on the cv .
then lift it up through the vice and pull down hard this should knock the joint off with out any damage to the joint or shaft .

I was thinking of that as I can't see it being to easy to separate it from the box. Will have a spare clip, but maybe able to get in and open it up.

Not a bad idea that mate, will let the drive shaft off tonight and then try your method see if it knocks it off

Least I can try it on the damaged cv joint first lol

Lol.. worst case I get the bearings everywhere and need it put back together lol

just be careful if you split the inner cv joint apart as you could damage the bearing if your a bit heavy handed :0(

About to have a go at taking the cv joint off the drive shaft I bought. Can see this being a nightmare.

One shaft down, need to strip the shaft off the evo an do it all over again lol

Both off, case of getting the new cv joint back on my drive shaft..just that c clip

put the joint in the vice face down and push the shaft in to if from above with firm even pressure if all looks ok you can give the shaft a light tap down with a mallett but you some times need to pushdown the shaft in while pushing in the clip with a small screwdriver :0)

Done and dusted, back on. Drive shaft nice and tight. Did drop a bit of grease but put more in. Only issue is could do with a clip to hold the outer cv boot to the joint, its a bit lose. Other than that should all be ok..... Fingers crossed.

Cheers for your tips mate. Tapped the cv joint on and used pliers to hold the clip down enough for the joint to pass over
