Does the Evo 8 (6 speed) box give better mpg than 5 speed V/VI?

Ok so I know the evo isnt the perfect motorway miles kind of car, then again the car I have now isnt really either.

Heres the thing, I want an evo and am currently saving for one.....Thing is I now drive to Derbyshire which is about 4 hours tops each way every week....and in the jdm dc2...It costs around £35 each way which isnt that terrible. I imagine an evo would be a lot more however and that might be the determining factor whether or not I get one, so Im hoping to get to the bottom of this before I end up with one and then realise I cant afford to run it.


My question is....Are the ratios on the 6 speed evo 8 better suited to more motorway miles than the V or VI....ie chuggling along in top gear at 70 mph? I would prefer the RS 5 or 6 but..I imagine the gears on that are quite close/low which would mean the rpms are higher at motorway speeds. The box in my integra is really low so....In 5th at 75mph ish the engine is going almost 4000 rpm hence the juice gets chewed. I drive 2 miles to work so that isnt a problem, its just the 8 hours driving a week that could add up, fast!



Anyone know about this sorta thing?

doubt it makes any real difference.. think in 6th on a motorway I managed to get all of 25mpg out of my fq 8.

of course it makes a difference!

In 6th you can cruise at 60-70 between 2-2500 RPM

in the 5 speeds you are sitting up at 4K RPM which in turn is just as the turbo is ready for action - you will see a "few" MPG's more in a 6 speed

For info - I get 280Miles out of my 8 MR sitting at the 60-70Mph. ( my runs are 120Miles ).

None of it matters an evo is just too thirsty if your doing a large amount of miles...

Well it empties your bank very quickly ;-) wouldn't want to be doing high miles in the evo. Cheaper to run a diesel daily car and evo as a toy to doing those miles in the evo.

9mpg from a gtr!! Lol.. that is terrible, dread to think what it made with your foot down ;-)

It's seriously a no-brainer. Not only is the 6sp better mpg on the motorway, the closer gears also make it better A-B. You won't be driving for 4 hours on £35 in an evo though. "£35" and "4 hours" are both meaningless metrics (you should use miles and litres used). I'd expect about £40 for 3 hours in an evo.

The issue isn't the tune or the power, all cars cruise at the same efficiency, the issue is that turbo charged cars aren't efficient when off-boost due to the lower compression ratio. They are only efficient on-boost, but of couse on-boost they are drinking it in.

Bottom line, an evo will cost more in petrol for sure than your current car. More in servicing too. If you're going to buy an evo, though, a 6sp is seriously a no-brainer. It's win-win.
