High there i am new to the evo scene.I have a very high spec evo 4 on a 1997 p reg import. My starter motor started making terrible noises and then would not start, because of the awfull noise it was making.I discovered that the bell housing had cracked so me and my freind pulled it together with some tin plate through bolt holes that we found had bolts missing.so far so good and the starter motor is working fine.Bit worried as to whether my solution will stand and for how long.So i am looking for a replacement box at an affordable price. also what would of been the cause of the gearbox to crack.Any suggestions would be welcome with a decent clutch coming with box would be even better.

Yeh, but where on the housing? Is it down near the starter? Is it where the clutch lever arm goes through? If it's a high spec engine, I'd think about buying well for the gearbox as they're not the strongest of things.

I asked a friend yesterday about this as he works on gearboxes and he said something about the location dowels. If the clutch has been changed and the location dowels taken out (if it has them) this will cause the housing to crack.

Best I can come up with mate

The dowls are very thin metal on the evo's, I couldnt see it making much difference but to that matter if it's been tightened up and not aligned correctly on fitment it can cause it to crack. I've seen them crack if over tightened too, but I'd need to see where it has gone. I'd get it properly alloy welded if you want to keep that box

I think that's the point my mate was trying to make about the alighnment as the dowles are only for location. Over tightening can crack it too my brother done it in his friends punto lol
