car wont start??

O.k this is getting more regular now & its driving me nuts. When i start my car like any of you i turn the key till it starts but ive got a gremlin stopping it starting. I get in the car & turn the key with the alarm off & i have nothing, ive found that if i hold the key in the crank position for a few seconds longer it sometimes starts?? Ive disconnected my clutch pedal switch as i thought it was that but its not, so im back to scratching my head as its no different to any others as in it has a stock alarm/cobra fob & is even a stock car.

Hi Bob.

When you turn the key in the barrel, are all of the lights in the dash coming on, every time you try it?

If not, the problem is the barrel.

Barrel is the prob. We get this a lot on some of the vehicles we work on. Don't know what goes wrong inside but replacing the barrel fixes the prob

The problem with the barrels is that the connection to the back plug becomes intermittent.

A quick fix is to hold it tightly in place, turn the key a good few times to ensure that the contact is good, if so, cable tie it in place as securely as possible and then start looking for a replacement.

This is a quick fix for getting you home and not a permanent rectification...

Wow cheers chaps just got an email to say one person has replyed! When you say the barrel is shot & hold it when turning what do you mean? The cowling is all still on aswell, is it the box on the end of the barrel that has a fault if so can you buy them seperate?

does it crank at all? I had this before few years back the car couldn't start no sound no nothing just the usual lights coming on. Turn out starter motor contact shorting out. took contact off gave it a scrub then all fine since.

No mate no crank at all just silence lol everything comes on lights etc but no crank on the cranking position when turning the key, but it you hold it there for about 5 seconds it will crank 9/10 times.

It's starting to sound like you might be right and that he has the same problem ...

Yeah it starts after crank but sometimes it takes a good 5-10seconds for it to crank (have to hold the key in crank position) but then sometimes it wont even crank.

may sound silly... but how good is the battery?. Mine had very similar taking a few goes to start up. replaced with a higher CCA battery No problem

Dont no how good the battery is but it usually happends after the 1st time started which confuses me? When it doesnt start it does crank well which makes me think its not the battery. Battery looks quite new tbh.

There's all kind of possibilities. If you have RAC why not them a call.nxt time it wouldn't start. Cos the one time mine crank but wouldn't fire th RAC pinned down to poor battery. Valtage and amp are quite differ. You may have good volt but low amp like mine was. Like I say that's my experience.
Others could be injectors, fuel line, immobiliser etc...
